Vegas Pro 10 Won't Start

CastleFox wrote on 10/13/2013, 11:42 PM
I'm seriously at the end of my rope with Sony Vegas.

I have Sony Vegas Pro 10 64 bit. For no reason at all it just decides one day it won't launch. I've tried uninstalling, cleaning the registry, and reinstalling and it still won't launch. This has happened on both my Windows 7 64 Bit system and Windows 8 system.

The only way I've been able to get it working temporally is to completely formant and reinstall Windows and Sony Vegas. This works for a few days and then it refuses to launch again.

I have 15 interviews for a Client I'm in the middle of trying to edit. I'm now down yet AGAIN and can't get it working.

I can't contact Tech Support because they ask for information I can only get if I open the Sony Vegas Application. Gee, that was smart of them.

You can get your serial number from My Account/My Software. That won't give you your machine ID, which is also a required field when you write to Tech Support, but maybe with the serial number you can just enter "not available" in the machine ID and still submit your request for support.

Also if you can find a Restore Point prior to when you were having problems and restore to that, perhaps it will help. Then lock your computer down so it doesn't inadvertently grab any updates from Windows or other sources. I once did a harmless Intel Driver update and it killed Internet access until I removed it.

Maybe you already know the above but wanted to mention it.

Good luck.

CastleFox - Sorry to hear of your nightmare.

This is why I keep at least two full OS/system hard drive backups - I use True Image but one can use ISOs too. I don't even use compression on those for I want them to be un-messed with. I also periodically update my emergency OS hard drive - which is simply a restore from one those backups. Vegas and media files are all on one or two separate physical drives to so that a system nightmare won't affect them.

My main OS drive is just for programs -- I even have low priority and low RAM stuff like My Documents in a separate partition - which I also bac kup with the OS drive; but they are technically two separate entities. I can restore just the OS on its own.

I know, I know--not a very useful response to your dilemma. But it's through having gone through situations like yours that I had to become OS backup compulsive.

Does the 32-bit version work?

Could be an update you're getting, a driver issue, etc. Not 100% sure about windows 7 (I just got it in my house for the first time this weekend, on my wife's laptop) but in 2K, XP & Vista you can manually uninstall specific Windows updates, so manually remove the ones that were installed & dated since you started having the trouble. If you updated your GPU driver, uninstall and go to the last known version.

Odds are they won't help with Vegas 10 anyway unless you buy a support plan, it's two versions out of date.

You are not alone CastleFox, I too have the same issue. I even tried previous and newer versions of Vegas (I have licences for multiple earlier versions of Vegas that all install & run fine). All other versions of Vegas install & run fine, but not 10. I've tried both 32 & 64bit in EN only, and have tried the version on the Physical DVD I have as well - no luck whatsoever.

I wonder if anyone from Sony is monitoring this forum? Hrmmm...

If it works for a time after reinstalling the OS and Vegas, I think a Windows update may be hosing you. Just to get your current job out, you might do another OS and Vegas reinstall (yeah, I know) but this time turn WIndows updates OFF and ignore all the complaints about it from the OS.

There have been several Win7 updates that were problematic and a few that were pure evil. If reinstalling is out of the question, at least Google "bad Windows updates", read what you find, and see if any of the noted updates were installed and remove them.

Fresh install of either the OS or the SW has no effect at all... other suggestions about turning off or lowering error reporting via PRSConfig.exe also had no effect.

No errors or info showing up in the system even log even... this is an extremely odd situation...

Can you confirm that the correct dotNet package was properly installed? It's been ages since I did a clean install, but I'm almost certain that Vegas prompts for a particular dotNet install on a clean OS. I know it's been mentioned before on the forum - you can search for the proper package.

And did you run the Vegas installation package "as Administrator?"

Last, have you tried starting Vegas in a compatibility mode? Other than these, you might try to start Vegas with Task Manager or another process viewer open to see if any Windows processes are starting when you double click Vegas' icon.

Well, it's now Jan 2014 and still no luck. I was told by Sony Support I'm not eligible for support because my version of 10 PRO is outdated. They just tried to sell me Version 12, and no I hear 13 is coming. Unreal. They don't fix the issues with the last version and start releasing new versions with more problems.

Guess what! Now DVD Arch won't launch. Yep! I've tried EVERYTHING in the forums, suggestions, FAQ etc. No luck. I tried to call support today only to get a message saying they are CLOSED for training. LOL

What really pissed me off is there are kids hacking versions of Sony Vegas Pro 10 and using them to make YouTube Videos, but my legal retail version won't work to save my life.
I have a paying client who I've edited 9 videos for that I know how to re-edit on another NLE because I can't access or edit them.

I'm so done with Vegas. I've given them years to correct and improve their issues, but this has gone too far.
I'll be creating a YouTube video with a competing NLE that warns people to AVOID SONY VEGAS AT ALL COST! I have a feeling Sony Vegas is on its way to the grave.

I have win 8.1 (AWESOME OS!) & Vegas 10 64-bit, no issues.

How far back did you roll back in your system?

A couple of ideas come to mind:

First
If Vegas terminates abnormally, the FileIOSurrogate process may be left running in memory. This can prevent a new instance of the program from starting up.

Exit Vegas then open the Task Manager, and look in the Processes Tag. Sort the list by Name. If you see FileIOSurrogate running, right-click and tell Task Manager to Kill the process. After that, the program should start up normally and relaunch a new copy of FileIOSurrogate.

There should be no fileIOSurrogate process running if Vegas is not. There should be only one instance of FileIOSurrogate running for each instance of Vegas (Vegas120.exe in the process list). You may need to refresh the task manager window to make sure.

Second
Start Resource Monitor (from the Windows Start bar) then Vegas. In Resource Monitor, go to the Overview tab, find vegas120.exe in the image column, right-click on vegas120.exe and then click on "Analyze Wait Chain". Hopefully you will see what Vegas is waiting for. If there is something there, try ending the processes in the wait chain and see if Vegas continues to start.

Hope this helps.

This guy has complained about issues with Vegas 10 64-bit & Win 7 64 for going on his 4th year now. I'm guessing he hasn't had it working much in that time frame.

Try starting Vegas as administrator.

Hi, What I have found which may help with both Vegas Pro and DVD Architect. About a year ago DVD Architect would not start no matter what. I went to a restore point, uninstalled and re installed etc. I found by acident that if you ctrl>alt>del and give a few seconds and it opens up. Once opened, I can work in DVD Architect without any problems. Not the ideal situation, but I hope this helps
