Vegas Pro 12 audio is scrambled

My specs are below. I have recently started having a problem with the audio in my timeline; this is a recent problem. I have not added or done anything different to Vegas or my PC that I can think of. I have used Vegas 12 for almost two years now without a problem.

Sometimes the audio will sound "scrambled"; meaning if you let an audio track play, it will play fine for 3-4 seconds, then it will cut to another part of the audio file in a higher pitch or lower pitch, then play fine for another few seconds, then it may skip to another part of the audio file, or it will "screech" with a loud clipped sound like TV static. I have tried different audio files and formats and it does the same thing.

I have tried:
1. Saving the files in SoundForge in various formats, bitrates, etc, and bringing them into Vegas that way; did not help.
2. Uninstalling Vegas and all files associated, and re-installing clean, did not help
3. every type of audio file that Vegas can read for a wide variety of sources, they all have the same problem
4. All these audio files play perfectly in every program and player on various computers, except for in Vegas.

Sometimes this happens and sometimes it does not, but it seems to be happening more frequently in the past few weeks.

I would like to find out what is causing this and fix it quickly or I will need to switch over to Adobe Premiere to finish work projects.
