Vegas Pro 13.428 - Resolve 11Lite Round Trip

set wrote on 2/1/2015, 8:19 PM
I'm just browsing around and found this nice tutorial for doing project round trip between these both application:

This tutorial was done in VP10 and Resolve9.

Unfortunately, I stuck after clicking OK in Resolve's AAF import dialog box, nothing happens.

Very similar just as Room101's comment in Youtube:
Room 101

Anyone here knows how to?

Thanks,

My understanding is you are better off exporting out a Final Cut XML file when working with Resolve. I myself am considering the move from Premiere Pro CS6/Speedgrade CS6 to Vegas Pro/Resolve 11 Lite.

Thank you Cliff Etzel.

*Facepalm*. Gosh, How I couldn't notice that before!
Yes, in File>Export, it is already mentioned FCP7 XML / DaVinci Resolve!

ok, problem solved! :)

@Cliff

I was curious if you feel that Resolve is significantly better than PP + Speedgrade? I looked at the features of Resolve on their website and it appears to be a whole lot more than just a color grading system. I personally don't care much for Speedgrade and instead use Red Giant Colorista II + PP CS6. I really like that I don't need to leave my environment to get to my grading tools. Though some people do color grading from their directory of clips before they begin editing, I do my grading as the final step in my workflow from the clips in my editor.

@Tech Diver - I've found issues with the CS6 workflow

1) PPro, although a great NLE, is a huge resource hog - simple projects with several sequences in the project file will shoot memory usage over 4GB - and that's for simple 2 minute video projects.

2) Exporting out to Speedgrade is time consuming and laborious. The video's are rendered out as DPX files which is hard drive intensive and have found Speedgrade CS6 to not be all that stable on my machine - even though I'm running hardware specs that are more than sufficient to run it.

3) My recent findings of Exports from PPro/AME CS6 have shown mediocre at best renders - specifically for MP4 files which I render out to 99% of the time for finished projects to the production houses I work with. Frameserving from Vegas Pro to Handbrake has clearly proven to me how superior it is in addition to reduced time spent in post for the bread and butter projects I shoot and edit. I've tried frameserving out from PPro CS6 to Handbrake but it never materializes. I select the signpost AVI being frameserved and open Handbrake to render it out and it doesn't work at all.

I prefer to add clips to the timeline, cut and then lock that version of the edit. Then I'll do my color corrections/grading. That has been my workflow in PPro but managing audio, effects, etc is unlike Vegas - having to add effects to individual clips especially if it's the same effect is a waste of valuable time. Add to that CS6 will not receive any further updates means that there's no guarantee it will work with Windows 10 when it's released. My needs for post are not as complicated as some editors. And the fact I can wrangle audio more efficiently wioth SONY's apps has been a mitigating factor in revisiting Vegas Pro.

I was frustrated with Vegas back when I made the switch to PPro CS5, but given the recent discussions over performance/stability a result of AMD Radeon cards being the ticket for those issues I was experiencing, I've purchased a Radeon 6970 to properly give Vegas Pro a go for my post work to see if that really will make a difference. As I"m unwilling to buy into Adobe's subscription scheme, our choices on the Windows platform have diminished substantially. Avid has gone the same route and I detest their methodology even more than PPro/Speedgrade. TBH, if I were on a MAC, I'd be using FCPX to edit with but I am a Windows shop all the way from my desktop/laptop to my Lumia 1520 cel phone.

The color correction tools in Vegas are on par with those in PPro IMO. I'd prefer SCS remove much of the fluff transitions and effects and keep what we pro users need on a daily basis. I dont' work in After Effects, preferring to farm that out to someone who knows what they are doing with motion graphics. I'm a DP/Shooter/Editor. Although Colorista is nice, I found it really bogged down my desktops performance without rendering the timeline. and any time I made a change, I had to re-render the timeline to get RT performance.

I've only dabbled with Resolve til now but given it can also cut projects, I'm considering it as a secondary tool for editing in addition to color grading, especially as I'm exploring the idea of shooting my first fictional short narrative film
