Vegas Pro 14 is useless for editing UHD H.264 :-(

liork wrote on 9/24/2016, 10:31 AM

As for today, all UHD capable Mirrorless cameras from Panasonic, Sony etc shoot H.264.

If you try editing that in VP14, doing color corrections and so, trying to render it into mp4 3840x2160, the program hang after few seconds of rendering and nothing you can do about. This is on a PC machine with Xeon cpu so no horse power problem.

By the way, if you just do simple editing as cut and paste, no problem (but this is not why we need Vegas).

This is exactly the same behavior of VP13, so no improvement here.

Cannot confirm that but see a different behaviour. Panasonic GH4 UHD mp4 files run fine with Vegas Pro 13 - and as far as I see they work also fine with Pro 14. Rendering to UHD with the Mainconcept AVC encoder runs here fine too, even with color corrections.

Same here. I have tested some GH4 MOV/MP4 files and they worked fine here up to a point. VP13.

You really want a top speed computer for UHD/4k work. SCS always recommended an 8 core machine for 4k work. To a point you can get by with a speedy 4-core. Two simulatneous video streams can work for me. That covers a track with a simple transition. Beyond those two streams the 4-core runs out of steam on 4k.

For the record my machine has a 4-core 4770k at 4Ghz.

My Machine has a 8 core Xeon CPU, so this is not the problem.

I render 4K form H264 4k clips all the time in VP13 (havne't tried it in 14 yet), but I have to use main concept and manually put in resolution, bitrate, etc. because there are no 4k presets. I haven't tried using other formats.

@fr0sty , this is what I do also. I have found what the problem is... it happens when I enable GPU support for rendering. I have the GTX 960. No improvement in this field from VP13.

So can you tell us more about your project and render settings?

Its a UHD mp4 from Panasonic GX80, using color curves, lut from Visioncolor plugin and color corrector. Rendering in mp4 Main concept manually set 3840x2160 and 50Mbps.

I have made a short test with some native GH4 UHD 24p footage, where I have applied the Visioncolor lut plugin with a lut, color curves and color correction. Tender test with the Mainconecpt AVC encoder to UHD 24p with a max bitrate of 50 and average bitrate of 40 Mbps runs fine (encode mode CPU only).

Means, I cannot repro that by now, here it works.

Questions:

- what are your settings in encode mode? Try with CPU only!

- any other informations from your side?
