Thanks for the replies. My first post here was if VP14 could work with .mov files to which I found out that QT is required to work with .mov files.
I don't have a ProRes 422 file to sample at the moment. I posted this question as part of my research on new cams whose's codecs can work with VP14 natively for next year's projects. I would prefer NOT to install QT. Otherwise, I prefer to go Mac for the 64bit QT and work with an editor that will natively work with ProRes.
If you're wanting the best implementation of ProRes support, for now you aren't going to get better than an apple app. Vegas' ProRes works, but there are still a few bugs being worked out here and there. The last update helped, though I'm still having trouble playing 4:4:4 ProResXQ files with audio without the audio dropping out. Rendering the audio to a new track fixed the issue, but none the less it shows that ProRes support is still early on in Vegas.
Vegas is 64 bit native, and if it is using its own decoder for ProRes I imagine that would be as well.
Well, from many choices of affordable ProRes-capable recording cameras / devices, BMD Ursa Mini is the only choice.
For other camcorders, you need an external device like Atomos...
I have been editing an Atomos Ninja 2 recording (usually live-switching multi camera), and VP14's performance along with many updates, has become better.
I have also been looking at the Raven recently and put it on my list too. There's an option to save it to RED's ssd
Edit to add: So I missed the apparent answer in my first post when Quitter replied to my first question on this forum about .mov but my mind was not on ProRes at that time.
"You need Quicktime for .mov files New is, that Quicktime is not needed for ProRes files."
