Vegas Pro 17 has suddenly stopped working

Problem:  My Vegas 17 has suddenly stopped working.  About 3 seconds after clicking the Vegas icon to open an existing project, the “Vegas Pro has stopped working” box appears), and the project does not open.  This is true of all existing projects.

Also:  If I open a new (empty) project using the Vegas logo on the timeline, an empty Vegas project screen does appear.  However, it will not accept any project media, neither whether dragged into the project media box, on onto the timeline (the red circle with bar appears.

I have completely uninstalled the program, removed all Vegas-related files from my PC, and reinstalled – it still doesn’t work.

I’ve uninstalled Boris FX to be sure there’s no conflict there – But I still can’t open Vegas.

Following is the problem description that appears when I try to use Pro 17:

I assume you have tried a reset/clearing the cache.
(Hold down the CTRL + SHIFT keys at the same time and launch VP to open the dialog)

Otherwise, try uninstalling again, but use a third-party uninstaller that can remove left-over registry entries and other pertinent data the OS uninstall leaves behind, which is usually the root of recurring issues
Revo Uninstall is highly regarded and has pro and freeware versions. Use the 'advanced' scan mode.

Are you trying to load mts files with AC3 5.1 sound? If so its a known problem from the latest windows update. You can uninstall the windows update or convert the 5.1 surround to stereo.

You guys figured it out! I did clear the cache, but without success. Just now I tried dropping a clip with a stereo track on the timeline of an empty project, and it worked. As I have tens of thousands of clips that are 5.1, I couldn't go that route. So I uninstalled the most recent update (Security update KB5001330, updated on April 14), and now I can open my existing 5.1 projects, and load 5.1 media. I'm back in business! Thank you!!

I assumed I had to prevent Windows from automatically updating again (in order to replace the missing update), and did so, using the standard maximum pause (35 days). Is there any way to allow future updates to load, without loading the KB5001330? It probably isn't a good idea to permanently stop getting all updates

By the way, one of my early tests when 17 stopped working was to load 16.5, which still worked. (Of course, even so, I still couldn't open any of my last two years of projects without 17 working.) So thanks again for giving me the solution!

I had the same issue and uninstalled all the latest Windows updates from April and it fixed the problem
