Vegas Pro 18 won't import AVCHD files

Dawn-Winans wrote on 4/30/2021, 5:45 PM

I just installed Vegas Pro 18 on my PC; operating system is Windows 10. The Vegas Pro 18 software completely quits responding and closes down when I try to import AVCHD files. (I bought this software specifically because it would edit AVCHD files.) I am recording with a new Sony video camera that records in AVCHD. I have tried all of the suggestions I could find online and have not been able to solve this problem. Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions!

If the file is .MTS and has ac3 5.1 surround sound then its a known issue that is being addressed by Magix soon. You can import an MTS 5.1 sound file if you convert it to stereo (the free handbrake program can do this).

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

@Dawn-Winans

Theres a recent .mts related thread here, can be temporarily resolved by uninstalling some recent Windows KB files, mainly the KB5001330 one ... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/windows-update-problem--128722/

And this thread ... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-18-crashes-when-importing-mts-video-files-with-surround-sound--128505/?page=1

If it turns out that it is an AC3 issue, here are some links to previous discussion etc ...

WWAAG ...

AFAIK, Vegas has never supported AC3 inside an MP4 container--it imports AC3 only from transport streams (m2t, m2ts, mts) and VOB files. “

“Mpeg files, which is a less frequently used older format, use a main concept decoder which requires a different audio decoder to handle its AC3 audio than mts and m2ts media. We are no longer able to use that decoder. We are looking at routing this through a new demuxer so the audio would be available again, but for now we are recommending transcoding files of this type.”

The VEGAS line of products uses native Windows tools for stereo AC-3 encoding and decoding. It is not possible to encode 5.1 AC-3 files since they are not supported through the operating system.

Summarising the AC-3 issue with respect to 5.1 audio.

Magix feedback ...

"Starting with recent versions of Windows 10, the VEGAS line of products uses native Windows tools for stereo AC-3 encoding and decoding. It is not possible to encode 5.1 AC-3 files since they are not supported through the operating system. To encode 5.1 audio, use another audio codec such as WAV."

My take on addressing it ...

#1 Transcode to another codec, say, AAC or WAV.

#2 In VP the Sony AVC and the WAV codecs support 5.1.

#3 Before using items #2 above, set the “Project properties” Audio to 5.1

#4 Create a new 5.1 render template using either one of #2 items.

#5 Note that these new render templates will only be visible to you when #3 is applied
