Vegas Pro 19: how to move assets to a new track (Newbie question)

Candive wrote on 3/2/2024, 9:00 PM

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I'm currently learning Vegas Pro. I have a basic question which may be due to the design of the software or there could be a shortcut or tickbox in Preferences...

I have 4 tracks. Track 1 = Video, Track 2 = Audio, Track 3 = Video and Track 4 = Audio.

My video is on Track 1 with the audio underneath on Track 2. I want to move my video and audio as a group to Tracks 3 & 4.

My current understanding is that I have to left mouse click on my video and then shift left mouse click on my audio before dragging both assets to tracks 3& 4. If I don't "shift click" then I will only be moving either the video or audio (depending on what I clicked on). Is this correct? Or is there some shortcut where when I click on the Video, it assumes I want to move the audio as well thus eliminating the need to "shift click."

If you want to move everything on the tracks then move the tracks?

Hi @EricLNZ

Thanks for responding. In my case, I may have a number of clips on the same track and I just want to move one of the video clips on the track with its associated audio.

The audio comes grouped (assuming it's in the same video file) so just left-click and drag the video to move it to another video track. If you also want to move the audio down or up a track you can, and it will create a new audio track if one doesn't exist.

@RogerS your assumption is correct. The audio is grouped with the video so if I move the video along the timeline the audio stays with the video unless I ungroup it. When I left click and drag the video to move it to another video track (in my example Track 3), as you suggest, the video moves but the audio stays on its original track (Track 2). Its still group to the video but the audio is now sitting on top of the video. I then have to left click and drag the audio if I want it to appear under the video (ie Track 4). Is this how it works?

Correct. If you move a group L or R along the timeline, the entire group - including all video and audio that is a member of that group - will move L or R as a group.

However, this does not apply when moving a group to a higher or lower track. If you want to move a group to a higher or lower track, all avents - both video and audio - need to highlighted in order for them all to move Effectively, grouping doesn't apply when moving events to a new track. If you highlight only one video event within a group and move tracks, only the highlighted video event will move to the new track.

Again, if you want move both video and audio events to a new track, then all events must be highlighted in order to move all those events to another or new video and audio tracks.

I've just tested this in Vegas Pro 19 to confirm the process.

An obvious question would be, "Why don't grouping moves work with up/down group moves as they do with lateral moving of groups on the timeline?" I think that the answer may well be that grouping can be used for video and/or audio events on many tracks - which I've done many a time. If there are video events on, say, 5 different tracks which are grouped together and only one of those events is wanted to be moved to a new/different track (so only that event is highlighted), a total group move would mean that all 5 veideo events would equally be moved up or down and one or more of those events may end up on a track with or without wanted/unwanted track level FX or on a track with or without wanted/unwanted Track Motion. So with simple grouping on one video and audio track this limitation may seem unhelpful, but with more complicated multi-tracked grouping arrangements, moving everything in the group up and down may well cause unnecessary complications and annoyance.

There's a keyboard shortcut for selecting all events in a group. Select one of the events already in the group, then press Shift-G. Then all the events in the group will be highlighted.

Hi @Dexcon thank you for your detailed explanation. I now understand. @Robert Johnson thank you for the shortcut; that is what I was looking for. In addition to that, I was also playing around with the selection box tool which also allowed me to select the events I wanted to move. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this post. I am very grateful! 😃
