VEGAS Pro 20.0 (Build 411) and GPU Rendering with NVIDIA 4080

Hello!

VEGAS Pro 20.0 (Build 411, and all previous builds) seems not to like my GPU. If I turn on "GPU acceleration of video processing" and select "Optimal - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080" and restart, VEGAS will start with a blank project, but load anything with media and VEGAS freezes. If I force exit, start it up with a blank project, switch the GPU preference to "Off", and restart VEGAS, all is well.

Obviously, VEGAS properly recognizes my installed card. I'm running the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver (546.01) and had also tried the latest game-ready driver. I'm running an i9-13900K with 128GB RAM on Windows 11 Pro (23H2, 22631.2715) across three BenQ PD2700U 27" 4k monitors. No problems with other media platforms (Lightroom and Photoshop) or games (MSFS).

For me, the GPU option is basically an on/off switch for crashing VEGAS. Any suggestions? Log files to review? Plug-ins to be suspect of? General ideas for next steps would be appreciated. (I am technical, so feel free to lay it on.)

Thanks, everyone!
Jason...

@jason-pegg Hi, I'm not so technical, a bit but not a lot 😂 I've got an RTX 3090 SUPRIM, I recently had a problem with 546.01 driver, black flashing frames, one program would only open as a Background process, I reinstalled driver 537.58, this fixed everything... Just a thought.

Good advice from Gid, also look at the following to see what Vegas finds when scanning your GPU:

C:\users\username\appData\local\VegasPro\20.0\gpu_video_x64.log (open it with note pad)

It will tell you what it finds and if it is compatible.

Hi;

Sort of related, I can't remember the shift key sequence to bring up the GPU "inspector" feature that will show what Vegas thinks about the GPU. Anyone remember it? Already tried searching and the FAQ.

Thanks,
Steve

I don't think there is a GPU inspector feature. See the file that andyrpsmith links to above for what VEGAS thinks about the GPU.

There is a shift+control shortcut to reset the program which also makes it look for the GPU again.

Found it - Shift Help. But that led me down a scary path, when looking at my Radeon RX570, it offered to check for and download the latest drivers. Luckily I set a system restore point - V 32 of the drivers completely broke the timeline preview window when GPU acceleration was enabled. revered to V 29. 4 hours of my life I will never get back. :(
