Vegas Pro 21 freezing everytime when I tab back into the software

Hi everyone,

almost a week ago I bought Vegas Pro 21 for a year subscription and when I used it the first time I changed all the project settings and render settings to what worked well for me in the past. After that I edited my first video with the new vegas 21 and everything worked perfectly well and smooth since I also got a new PC for editing.

Today I wanted to create my second video and I instantly noticed that there was something wrong. Everytime I wanted to drag and drop video files from my SSD video folder into Vegas 21 it freezes for like 10 second to finally load the file and work again.

But not only when I drag and drop files into the software but also when I simply tab out and back in again. Always for around 10 seconds. It drives me insane. The first time I used it everything was fine and all of a sudden these constant freezes. Makes editing awfully frustrating tbh.

To provide more information regarding my problem, this is my new PC:

  • Mainboard: MSI Gaming Plus WIFI AMD B650
  • RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo Expo RGB DDR5-6000 DIMM CL32-38-38-96
  • GPU: RTX 4070 Ti SUPER JetStream OC
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16x 4.5GHz
  • PSU: 850 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 12M Modular

You can also find my Vegas Pro 21 settings. I also included the render settings even if the rendering process works fine without corrupting my video file:

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8530/un4ssl8f_png.htm

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8530/qh85uaa7_png.htm

The software is installed on my M2 500GB SSD like my windows.

My files for editing are saved on a 1TB SSD and whats weird is that once I tab out and back in my SSD where my video files are located randomly peaks to a 99% usage according to the task manager which doesn't even make sense because this also happens when I just tab out and into Vegas 21 without dragging a file.

Maybe the new update 3 causes this problem which would be weird because I used Vegas a couple days ago without having any problems.

What is different when working on the second video is that the video files now are native 2K resolution instead of full hd.But this shouldn't be the problem with such hardware right? Its not even 4K.. And some clips are even 720p and cause the same freezing.

Would love to know if others have the same problem and if there is a potential solution to this.

If you require additionally information please let me know.

Cheers!

Thanks for the try. I already have this option enabled and reduced the RAM usage but no success sadly.

Are these network drives?

At 2 that option has to be disabled and at 1 Dyn Ram prev max has to be set on default when you don't use the Shift-B often.

Nope. Just normal drives installed in my computer.

Okay wow. I just disabled the second option as you said and reduced the RAM usage from 50% to 10% and SO FAR it works smooth as fk. No stuttering, no freezing, nothing. I can tab out and back in, can put video files and music files in my latest project without any issues.

I really hope this is the solution for my issues.

Thank you for the help!

The solution is most of the time to leave every setting on default. Changing defaults without knowledge can harm a lot....

@Sooxzay, here's what that second option (Close files when not the active application) does:

If checked, when you leave VEGAS and go to another program, all files opened by VEGAS are closed. This then allows you to work with any of the files in the VEGAS project and save them and VEGAS will automatically pick up the changes (this would typically be with images or audio being modified by another program). However, this will happen even if you go to a web browser or any other program on your system. When you go back to VEGAS, it then has to "reopen" all of those closed files. This is what can take some time if you have a LOT of files in the project.

If unchecked, when you leave VEGAS and go to another program, all files used by this project remain opened and cannot be modified by another program. If you tried to change an image and save it, it would tell you the file is locked and require you to save it under a new name. Then, when returning to VEGAS, you would have to change the original image for the image with the new name (for example.) This would be happen even if you go to a web browser or any other program on your system - the files would remain "open". When you go back to VEGAS, as all the files are still open, it does not have to "reopen" them so it will be instantaneous.

Advantages both ways depending on what you are trying to do...

Makes a lot of sense. Vegas has to reopen them which needs time ofc.

Good to know since I never edit scenes or media I already put into Vegas. If I modify them, I would just do it in Vegas itself. Thanks again for the solution but also for the explanation!

Hello @Sooxzay, can you say how many and which type of files (MediaInfo) and which size the video files have approximately? Even with re-open option enabled it should never take 10 seconds on a SSD to reopen the files..

Maybe there is some issue happening with your type of files..

Hi Steve. I always used the same recorded gameplay files which are the following:

Depending on the length of the recorded gameplay they vary in size between 5 (around 10 minutes long) to 20GB (around 40 minutes long). These are MP4 video files recorded with NVIDIA GeForce Experience using a bitrate of 70 Mbps and 60 FPS with ingame native resolution 2560x1440.
