VEGAS Pro 23 - Jerky and Laggy Audio Dragging on Timeline

Abdali wrote on 9/13/2025, 7:48 PM

Hello everyone,

I've been experiencing an issue with VEGAS Pro 23.

I've found that the simple act of dragging audio events on the timeline is very jerky and laggy. It significantly slows down my workflow and makes precise audio placement difficult even when no plugins are applied.

I'd appreciate it if you could share your experience and confirm if this is happening on your end as well.

Does it matter what kind of audio it is? PCM WAV? MP3? AAC from a video?
It's not just that it's snapping to frames is it?

I've also encountered a noticeable UI bug in VEGAS Pro 23.

The small navigation arrows used to cycle left and right through VST plugins have disappeared. They are completely invisible, though the functionality still works—if you click in the place where they are supposed to be, the plugin list navigates as expected.

These arrows were visible and functioning in previous versions of VEGAS Pro.

After further testing, I've found that the issue is specific to the media type.

The jerky and laggy behavior happens with audio that is extracted from video clips from various sources, including:

Sony A7IV

Sony A7S II

DJI Pocket 2

GoPro Hero 4

Mini DV

Plenty of other H.264 and H.265 files 10 bit & 8 Bit

The problem specifically affects audio from these sources (I have not yet tested AAC). Standalone audio files like WAV and MP3 seem to work fine on the timeline.

This leads me to believe it's a codec-related problem, or an issue with how the software handles audio from a video source. Just to be clear, the issue is not just snapping to frames; the entire dragging motion is visibly delayed and stuttering.

Interestingly, this problem has now appeared on my system in VEGAS Pro 22 as well, affecting both new and older projects that use audio from video files. I have also reset my setting still no luck.

@Abdali: Could you please describe what you mean by 'extracted'. What's your workflow? We would like to reproduce it.

By "extracted," I meant the standard process of working with an audio event that has been separated from a video clip.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of my workflow that leads to the issue:

I import a video clip from one of the affected cameras (e.g., Sony A7IV or GoPro Hero 4 or any h264 or h265 file) onto the timeline. Then i ungroup the video and audio.

I attempt to drag the now-separate audio event to a new position on the timeline, the jerky and laggy behavior occurs. The dragging motion is visibly delayed and stuttering. In contrast, if I import and drag a standalone WAV or MP3 file on the same timeline, it moves smoothly without any lag.

On a related note, the exact same bug has now appeared in my VEGAS Pro 22. I have already tried reinstalling VEGAS Pro 22 and 23 and performing a clean reinstallation of my graphics drivers, but the issue still remains in both versions. I can only speculate on the cause, but the timing is suspicious as the problem started immediately after I installed VEGAS Pro 23.

Hello @VEGASFlorian,

i have a screen recording of this exact issue. i am new to this forum so this is my first post.

this issue only happens when using vst plugins (3 or 2 does not matter) and i can confirm it happens even in vegas 22 build 250, otherwise native plugins that came with vegas runs fine and does not have this issue.

i've seen people mention it in a post previously : https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/audio-drag-delay--140960/ (it was about vegas 20) so this issue has been there for a very long time (i think), and its pretty serious.

There seem to be two separate issues here:

The first is video and audio becoming choppy once separated on the timeline (ungrouped).
The second is performance with audio once certain VSTs are added.

@VEGASFlorian In case you didn't see it the first discussion on ungrouping continued here where it was broadened to audio & video.
Another user posted about lag with RX10 Spectral Denoise here. (problem carried over from VP 22.250).

@RogerS should i make a separate post about this issue or is it still related enough ?

@ajizu-t Thanks for asking. I would suggest making a new post on this and listing the exact plugins that are having issues so others can test it and confirm problems beyond your system.
