Vegas Pro 8.0 & Windows 7 - beware

burgmanguy wrote on 11/9/2009, 5:20 PM
After upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), I learn that I can do all editing just fine .... only I can't render! I get an error message, the detail I can't understand.

So, I decide to send it to Sony support and find out what I should do.

They won't even accept my request because the will only support version 9 on Windows 7.

Sony Support ..... sucks! ... big time!

Now I see why people are going to Apple and leaving Sony and Microsoft.

Windows 7 was not a released product when Vegas Pro 8 was released, so it has probably not been tested to the level that Vista or XP were. From SCS's perspective it makes sense to say that Vegas Pro 8 is not supported on Win7. From our viewpoint though it would be nice if SCS made an official statement of support like several other companies have done, because for the most part anything that ran on Vista has been running fairly well on Win7.

Any case, why don't you post the errors that you are seeing, along with some details. I'm sure several people are using Win7 here, so they might be able to help.

"So, I decide to send it to Sony support and find out what I should do."

What did you expect them to do. Support supports stuff they say should work. and are there to deal with problems when it doesn't.

"Sony Support ..... sucks! ... big time!"

Huh?? See above.
They gave you the answer, buy V9. If that doesn't work THEN you should rightfully expect support to take heed.

"Now I see why people are going to Apple and leaving Sony and Microsoft"

You maybe in for a rude shock. Apple don't support anything they say is unsupported either. Find me a vendor that does, I for one would never buy a product from such oxymorons.

I have had Win 7 RC 64 bit, and Vegas 8c running fine for several months now and it seems to be a little bit faster also. As was stated please post your errors and your sys. config and see it you can get some help here.
Also just a word of advice starting a post with "Sony Sucks" is not a good way to ask for help on a SONY forum, just a thought.

Its funny because I have to use 8c in windows 7 64bit because 9c does not work well. Go figure

Wow, Burgmanguy, all you left out was calling them "doody faces."
TheHappyFriar wrote on 11/10/2009, 4:59 AM
if your support request was 10x more detailed then your forum post I can see why they won't even look at it.

In fairness to the OP, I'm not 100% certain if SCS have publicly stated that ONLY V9 is supported under Win7. I see we now have a new forum for Windows 7. A sticky there listing what is and isn't supported under Win 7 would seem apt.

they did publicly state it: in the release notes for the latest 9 patch they said "windows 7 support". No such statement in the latest 8 or 8.1 notes. Only Vista support.

Good point. First, the only info I gave them was what the requested on their forms.

Here is the "error" detail in hopes, as you say, someone can provide help.

burgmanguy...quick but qbvious question: are you running in compatbility mode?

If not, right click the Vegas icon.
select PROPERTIES
select COMPATABILITY
select Vista SP2
select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
close the properties window.
Run Vegas.

See if that helps.

ps: it would be cheaper and more logical to buy Vegas Pro 9 than to go buy an Apple (which will just introduce a whole new range of fun problems). Incidentally, a lot of Apple's "fixes" belong in the "Doctor, it hurts when I do this...then don't do that" school of technical support.
MSK wrote on 11/10/2009, 11:24 AM
You're correct that version 8 is not officially supported in Windows 7 but in general should probably work normally.

If you want support directly from the SCS support staff, you could always download the trial version of Vegas Pro 9 which is supported in Win7 and test. If it fails, then you can submit your tech support request. If it works, then the solution is to upgrade.

burgmanguy wrote on 11/10/2009, 4:30 PM
That's what I did (download trial version of 9 64-bit). It worked just fine ... the video is completed and uploaded to Vimeo.

Thanks everyone ... and I apologize to those whom I offended ... that was not my intention.

re: SCS's position on supported versions on Win7 is in the Knowledgebase. Vegas 8 is not on it.

wow, I personally think it bites, if Pro 8.0 (either 8.0c or 8.1) won't work in Windows 7

Burgerman,
See this thread on Creative Cow:
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/881073

Similar stack trace to yours, a problem in wmfplug3.dll, which is something Sony uses to render in Windows Media formats. Are you attempting to render in WMV?

The thread above doesn't solve the underlying problem, but it does show that the problem happens on XP and Vista for this person.

Try rendering to AVI or another format and see if that helps.

The problem is likely to be a DIRECTX configuration problem, a 3rd party plugin or software install.
Did you do a clean install or upgrade for WIn7?
