Vegas Pro 8: Problem if Can't Register?

Hi:

I may be able to get a used copy of VP8 but am not sure that I would be able to register it. The owner doesn't seem to know about transferring ownership. But he is currently looking into this.

I'm trying to determine that it isn't stolen.

What if I got it and couldn't transfer ownership? Could I still use it? I'm not really interested in upgrading to 9, so that wouldn't be an issue to me; but are there any other limitations that I should be aware of?

if it's legit sony will transfer with almost no effort on either person's part. I even think there's a form for him to fill out on the support page.

if it's not legit odds are they'll say "get the cd key from a program" or "can't register".
