Vegas Pro - Intel HEVC 10bit 4:2:2 rendering

Hi,

I just upgraded to Vegas Pro 15 and created a test project. I've imported 4K 10bit 4:2:2 files from my Lumix GH5 and wanted to render the project with Intel HEVC codec with the same settings. In codec settings, I can chose 10 under "Bit per pixel" drop-down, but "Chroma subsampling" remains at 4:2:0. This value is grey and can't be changed. Do I need to do any modifications to my project in order to unlock 4:2:2 option for 10bit video? Or how should I understand this?

This is a known issue (see known issues of the Vegas Pro read-me file).

Many thanks Marco! Yes, I see "Only 4:2:0 10-bit HEVC rendering is supported." :-( Maybe we'll see an update to this sometime in the future.

FWIW, HEVC is a delivery format, not something you want to keep if you plan to further edit the video. AFAIK, all delivery formats use 4:2:0, even HDR TVs display 4:2:0 video, they just do so in 10 bit or higher color. Correct me if I'm wrong, folks, but that's how I remember it. So, rendering higher, unless you are rendering for yourself, isn't going to help you much.

Yep - the HEVC delivery format (also HDR UHD) is always 10bit 420. This is so mainly to limit the deliverable' size and due to most Premium UHD TVs bitrate limit on input.

Thanks for your answers. This helps a lot. In fact my intention is to export the final project to be viewed on UHD TV. My concern was if it makes sense to export in 10 bits if the chroma is limited to 420. According to your answers, it certainly does. Now I'm happy :-)
