I'm new to Vegas. Has anyone used the Vegas 4 Editing Workshop book by Douglas Spotted Eagle and/or his Class on Demand DVD's. If so, what is the difference between them, and is it worth spending the extra $80 for the Class on Demand?
I have both and they are both excellent sources of information. The DVD will give you a feel for Spot’s workflow that you can’t get out of the book. Watching him work is a great way to see how quickly someone can navigate the interface using shortcut keys and picking up the habits of an efficient person is something to emulate. The book covers some overlapping material (as you might expect) but also covers different material. The book comes with sample VEG files and media, which allow you to play more. Working along with the book I learned different things that I didn’t pick up while watching the DVD. So if you can afford it, get both. If you can only afford one, ask yourself if you like to read and try or sit and watch and try. Then get the one that’s more your style of learning.
As JohnnyRoy suggests, deciding between a video or a book comes down to your own learning style. If you do better with having things explained and shown to you, the video will be a better choice.
I think the majority of video producers, being the visually-based folk we are, fall into this category.
I would also like to humbly mention my own DVD training. It is 3 hours on two discs, and can be seen at www.VegasTrainingAndTools.com.
Many people have both Spot's and my DVD sets and say that they compliment each other well.
