Vegas Splash Screen and program Freeze

monteolsen1 wrote on 9/9/2004, 8:44 PM
Hi,

I remember reading about this a looong time ago, but it hadn't affected me. Now, it has bitten me big time and is making Vegas 5 unusable. I can start Vegas 5 fine once, but if I quit and go back into the program, the splash screen displays and the program never finishes loading.

I turned off the options to reload the last file and tried changing sound devices, but none of those worked.

I have updated all of my drivers to the latest versions and am using XP SP2.

I disabled the firewall thinking it might be causing a problem, but that didn't help, either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in solving this problem.

Thanks,

Do a search here for "wowexec" to find your answer.

Thanks. I already tried that solution and it didn't help at all. I also looked at the Twain drivers and that also doesn't seem to have helped. I am stumped.

I'll say this...

I havent had any problems with V5 until I installed SP2. See my thread "I Smell SP2..."

Thanks Skywatcher,

I think I will uninstall SP2 to see if that fixes the problem. I hope Sony is looking at this. I tried all of the fixes listed under the Wowexec threads and none of them worked for me. Also tried disabling all of the startup items and that didn't work. I did try a safe start and it worked, but Vegas reported an unknown error.

Thanks again to you and Jetdv.

CTRL+ALT+DEL
then END PROCESS of wowexec.exe

This is the fix or workaround for this. As soon as you END PROCESS you should see VEGAS immediately come to life.

If you are having further problems then definitely report or post them so SONY can have a go. (Although it seems like fellow editors/forums are usually the ones that find the fixes.)

Howdy Lamont,

Thanks for your suggestion. Wowexec.exe isn't loaded. I did notice one thing, though: Even after quitting Vegas 5.0b, it still remains in the task list. Anything I try to do to end Vegas as a task in the list fails. I even uninstalled Vegas and it was still loaded in the task list, taking up about 32mb of system memory.

Unfortunately, I tried all of the suggestions about the Twain_32 file and wowexec.exe and nothing has helped in that regard.

Try changing the video acceleration and see if that helps -- usually it's a slider in Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced. Also check your video card driver version -- perhaps you need install an update?

I uninstalled SP2 along with my HP software and ATI Multimedia Center for its HDTV Wonder. The program is now running correctly. I had uninstalled the HP and ATI software with no good result, but when I uninstalled SP2 for Windows XP, it seemed to correct the problem.

I will try lowering video acceleration.

Do you know if Sony is working on a fix for this problem?

Thanks again for your help.

To SonyTSW, Lamont, Skywatcher, and jetdv,

I believe I have traced it down to something in XP SP2. I have reinstalled all of the software I uninstalled except SP2, and the problem has not reappeared. It is possible, judging from the file dates on the Twain_32.dll on my system after installed SP2 (August 4, 2004) that the incompatibility may have been with that Twain driver. There were no other drivers with this file name on the system except that one file.

I'll keep testing. I hope Sony will try to find a fix for this problem and the wowexec.exe problem rather than having users fix it themselves.

Thanks again for all of your help.
