Vegas Temporarily Freezes During Playback. Why?

Sometimes when I'm using Vegas is temporarily freezes on me. What is causing this and how do I fix it.

Example: I make a time selection on the timeline and I hit the "play" button on the mouse. Vegas plays the clip but my mouse arrow temporarily freezes and I am unable to do anything until the program decides to come out of the freeze. Typically around 10 to 15 seconds or when the clip (time selection) finishes.

Any suggestions?

You need to post complete system specs, otherwise we can only make a wild guess.

wild guess: You are using one of the 1394 drive models that has proven problematic for other users, do a search on 1394 or firewire for more details.

IF you are playing back from a 1394 drive you may have playback problems in Vegas and some other NLEs. In my experience MOST brands of 1394 drive enclosures had this problem. The issue seemed to be the bridge card used in the enclosure. ( I say most brands-not most users. Most users seem to have bought ADS enclosures and have had very few problems.)

These drives will capture media and play it back in a player like Windows Media Player but will not play back well in an NLE. My guess has been that this relates an NLE having to read both the media and ancillary files like Vegas *.SFK files at the same time.

Some drive enclosures play back without a problem. The new Dual-Link enclosures from ADS work well (although I'd mount your drive on 5.25->3.5 rail adapters and try to increase the airspace under the drive. I had heat problems with this case and certain disks).

Others may be able to recommend other enclosures. Your best bet is to ditch the enclosure for a make and model that is known to work well-specifically with Vegas. Recommendations from people using another NLE won't cut it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
