Vegas via Bootcamp... any users here?

Streamworks Audio wrote on 7/30/2015, 5:12 PM
Due to the fact that I need to use both Mac and PC for majority of my work, I have often considered consolidating my workstation to a single machine. And as such I have often of getting an iMac (or maybe even a Mac Pro) and run Windows via Bootcamp. This way I can have both without having to clutter my work space.

But as I will still be using Vegas for all my video work (I have Final Cut Pro X, but I still keep coming back to Vegas because I know it so well) I am wondering if anybody here is running Vegas via Bootcamp and if there are any issues I should be aware of in case I do go that root.

Cheers,
Chris

I was reading that one... there is some talk about Bootcamp. But that thread seems to talk more about Vegas within a virtual box (VMWare),

Reread the post by Johnny Roy in that thread. It directly answers your question.

As others have pointed out I'm doing just that. No issues at all. Vegas Pro runs great via Bootcamp with my old AMD Radeon HD 5870 and my new AMD Radeon HD 7950. You just need to stick with the Bootcamp GPU drivers that AMD maintains.

B&H Photo is having some good deals on the Apple 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2015) starting with $200 off at $1799 for the base model. I played with the iMac 5K at the Apple store and it's a gorgeous display and it performs great.

Thanks Johnny,

The iMac 5K comes with an R9 290 I believe. So I should be sure to get AMD's drivers for Mac and not Apples?

My PC at the moment is spec'ed quite a bit higher than the iMacs, so this is something I am looking at considering for the next big hardware upgrade.

I've run Vegas in a Bootcamp partition on my 2010 Mac Pro, AMD 7950, for years, for paid work. It is a great solution, but to be honest, it's better to have a Mac and a separate PC. The jumping back and forth, each time requiring a reboot, gets old.
Building a PC soon, and running the old Mac Pro and it side by side. That way I can be working on, or rendering, projects simultaneously in Vegas on the PC and in FCPX on the Mac.

Yeah I would imagine that the constant reboots would be a pain. I do a lot of videos where screen captures are the primary source. But I capture both Mac and PC, so having one machine would reduce the clutter :-)

@Streamworks Audio

Another option to reduce clutter is to have your monitor(s), keyboard and mouse attached to multiple PCs through a KVM switch. At present, I have 3 PC's attached to a 4-port KVM switch. Works very well and is really quite convenient being able to instantly switch between the three computers. Having to reboot would be a showstopper for me completely. If you google "mac pc kvm switch", you'll see that others have successfully controlled both a Mac and PC in this way. Just an idea.

I've been using Vegas via bootcamp for about four years now on both Macbook Air's and Macbook Pro's on both Windows 7 and 8, works great, no issues here at all! Reboots don't bother me because I never personally use OSX (strictly a Windows user) so you'd have to ask others on how irritating that is in real world use. I imagine that could potentially get tiresome, but bootcamp gives Vegas full hardware gpu support which is really important for your timeline run smooth on these little laptops.

No, I'm sorry if I gave you that impression. Apples drivers should be up to date for that card. I was just pointing out that if you do decide to use AMD's drivers, DO NOT use the standard Catalyst drivers. AMD maintains a separate set of Bootcamp drivers specifically deigned for Apple devices.

In my case, I was using Windows 7 in Bootcamp and the Apple drivers we very stable and performed great in my 3D applications. Unfortunately, it was below the minimum version for Vegas Pro so I upgraded to the latest AMD Bootcamp drivers which actually performed a little worse in my 3D applications but at least Vegas Pro was happy. So in that case, the original Apple drivers were actually better performance wise.

BTW, you can run Windows 7 in a virtual machine on your Mac so you don't have to reboot unless you need native GPU support. Quite often I'll just open Vegas Pro with VMware Fusion and use it right on my Mac desktop. I posted a picture in the other thread but here it is again:

Vegas Pro running in Unity mode on my Mac OS X Desktop. Notice the Vegas Pro icon in the Mac dock!

running Vegas Pro 12 on my Mac mini with bootcamp. Last I checked , it was working fine. If you have a Mac Book Pro only, then this your option to run Sony Vegas Pro.
