Now, Signa, what Rob forgot to tell you was that he's the self-
appointed joker of the Sonic Foundry Vegas USER's Discussion Forum.
Don't take him seriously, he doesn't even own the program. These
points he stated has nothing to do with reality, but I take it you're
a bright enough person to realize that.

Anyway. As a registered user, let me tell you my somewhat more
relevant opinion.

Pro's:

Vegas is easy, fast and competent. It's got strong web development
capabilities and is perfect for delivering digital content. I design
sound, music, animations and web content for computer games, and have
had much use of Vegas in my line of production, as it is flexible and
very well suited for working with digitally distributed media, not
just recording-and-playing-back.

Con's:

Vegas is a little expensive, still somewhat buggy and is not
primarily suited for professional multi-track hard disk recording.
There have also been voices raised in some of the video plugin
behaviours. (Don't use these much myself, check the forum for details)

Now... Some personal reflections on this subject:

It seems that Vegas is experiencing some sort of schizophrenia as to
whether it is a video or audio program.

In light of Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge, a literally outstanding
audio sample editor, Sonic Foundry has gathered a huge following
among professional musicians and audio engineers. This lot, myself
included, is very eager to see Vegas fulfill all their wet dreams in
digital recording systems. After all, Sound Forge did just that. Now
that the product is actually out, it would seem that some are
disappointed in the result. I personally am not, but I don't count as
an audio professional, either.

Meanwhile, by integrating video and web production into Vegas, they
have opened a new target market with different needs and base
knowledge. Now, in retrospective, I think Vegas survived the
transition very well. It is still usable as a digital recording
studio, but has the capability of fast video and media work, giving
professional results.

That's my $2 on Vegas pro's and cons.

i capture DV NTSC and output DV NTSC ..
i've had VV for about a month now ... i have not read the manual but
i did watch the tutorials ..
i love that i can continue to edit while it plays back in real
time ..i can continue to cut, add dissolves, color correct , crop,
all while it continues to play in real time preview ...
i usually capture a 60 min tape in 1 clip ( 12+gig) .. i have only
just begun to discover the audio portion of VV .....

the only con i have found and it should NOT affect the web ..is when
VV has to re-render it uses the ms dv codec...which in the new
version ( directX 8) is greatly improved over the old v6 BUT it is
not up to canopus or main concepts DV codec's... IMO for a DV project
to end up on broadcast TV i would not go beyond 2nd generation using
the ms dv codec ... IMO the old version 6 was unacceptable for
broadcast TV .. i have NOT found a way to use a different DV codec in
VV ...i've tried but as yet have not got them to work ...
for the web you will be using other codec's .....

after using VV i find it very difficult to go back and use editDV ,
MS pro6 , premiere ... ( in MS6 and premiere you can use other dv
codec's)

The truth is it works great. As a matter of fact the
price is lower through them now.$489.Price around and you will find
there is nothing in that range that will do or support what your
needing WELL!
That is fair.;-)
Hop aboard and welcome!!

Just so everyone knows: You CAN render to the Canopus codec in Vegas,
if a Raptor board is installed. Since the Raptor is neither OHCI or
Directshow compatible, we do not talk to the board at all. At this
point you'll only be able to render to the Raptor codec and print to
tape with the Canopus capture tool. Make sure you pay attention to
file size limits as those renders cannot not be OpenDML avis.

I totally agree that not having support for the board makes
purchasing it for use with Vegas rather pointless, but if you already
have the board, and are in love with the Canopus codec that much (we
agree, its a nice codec), it can be used for rendering.
