Vegas Video 3.0. EVENT DEINTERLACE WANTED!

NickAga wrote on 11/22/2001, 11:10 AM
Hi again.

So early I named VV3 as healing for my problem. I thought so...
Recently I downloaded a demo of VV3, and the problem still exists.
A problem was posted here:
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=82452&Replies=3
Briefly:
Setup: PC 1394 DigitalCamcorder TV. PAL domain.
In VV2 stretching progressive event causes heavy JITTER on a TV.
In VV3 - the same, with any parameters set.
Interlace filter - didn't gave any change. Nor the "resample frame rate".

****************************
In VV3 I still can't deinterlace the EVENT, with all other events of one media left unchanged (progressive). That's the core of the problem.
****************************

I found, if an event is stretched/collapsed (to make a smooth motion, or to give it a punch), the best configuration for VV2 is:
#########################
1. In project properties: "Advanced" - Deinterlace method: INTERPOLATE fields.
2. In video - media properties: "Lower field first".
3. In video - event properties: "Resample" checked.
#########################
If either of the parameters not set as above, you will get a complete crap, printing to DVtape, or on a TV thru camcorder, when a stretched fragment runs.

I wish I could have checkbox for setting on/off DEINTERLACE for an EVENT, and field order for an EVENT: "Progressive", "Upper first", "Lower first", all of it at the EVENT properties tab!
Just wondering, is it so hard to set deinterlace parameters for an EVENT, not whole MEDIA.
Did any of VV*.* customers claimed about similar problems? Just try the setup - it's so silly obvious!

"Adobe Premiere" has ability to deinterlace individual clips, and auto deinterlace clips, whose speeds are not equal 100%. It helps, but it works like my "best configuration" without Resampling. Resampling is great feature of an event, it gives much more smooth for objects moving in stretched frame sequence, with no flickering on a TV at all!
This is just investigations, 'cause I will never use AP as main NLE software, you know why.

Hey, people @ SonicFoundry, would you please, the ray of light for the problem!

----------------
Still using VV2, 'cause VV3 isn't a cure,
Nickolas.

Sorry for my bad English.

I used to have the same problem in VV2 with my PAL setup, but it was fixed by one of the updates (I think it was 2.0d).

Stretching an event in VV3 works perfectly for me as long I remember to check the Resample switch - plays back perfectly on TV.

Sorry I can't help.

To Rab:
Hi!

I'm using VV2.0b build362.
Upgrading is good idea! Thanks. In progress.....

My video domain is PAL too.
What setup are you using: camcorder, etc.?
In what way your TV connected to a PC, via capture card and camcorder, or you connect it to TV-out of your videocard, or otherwise?
What is your capture/export software?
Stupid questions, I know, but I'm lost with this problem :(

Nickolas,

Make sure you have DirectX 8 and the Microsoft DV Update - VV2.0d and later will require these.

My setup is Windows 2000. I'm have a bog standard IEEE-1394 card and I'm using using Microsoft Drivers.

I've been using a Panasonic NV-DS33B for the last couple of years, and have just replaced it with a Sony DCR-PC9E (Both PAL models).

I use the DVin connection on the camcorder to preview my work - my TV is connected to the video out on the camcorder - using External Monitor support. I definitely couldn't get this to work for PAL on version 2.0b.

I've just re-read your original post and I have a couple of comments -

- I've never needed to use the deinterlace option in the advanced settings.
- If your final destination is DV then the project settings should not be progressive. Don't worry if you see interlacing when playing back on a PC monitor - it will look fine when sent back to the camcorder.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again, Rab!

I have similar setup. PC (windows 2000) - TI OHCI compliant IEEE-1394 - Panasonic DS11 PAL - TV.

I'll try to re-tweak parameters in project properties and set them all to what I've understood from your advises.

I have downloaded an upgrade 2.0h and will try it in practice. Any results will be posted here for sure.

The thing, that confuses me now - why can't I reach
what I want in VV3.0 too? Either the software isn't for pro, or there is a way out 8-)

Nick.

If you really really need to to deinterlace an event, but not the entire source media clip, you could render that event to a new track, and then deinterlace that new event's source media. Render is extremely fast since all you are doing is copying- no loss either.

For timestretched events, all you need to do (99.9% of the time) is check the event resample switch. Remember that fields display differently on a computer monitor and a TV monitor, especially apparent when play is stopped.
