Vegas Video 4.0 Crash on Startup

dkuntz wrote on 3/18/2003, 8:16 PM
I am using Vegas Video on an AMD Athlon 1.4 machine with 512 RAM and an 80 gig harddrive using Windows XP Pro SP1. The software installs fine, but crashes everytime I try to run it. I have checked the knowledgebase and Terminal Services are started as well as 8.3 file names. I can't find anything else to do to fix the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Are all your drivers up to date?
What make of video card do you have?

All drivers are current. My video card is an ATI Radeon VE 32meg.

Are there other programs that are incompatible with Vegas? Or, is it a hardware problem?

ATI comes up alot when it comes to Vegas crashes at start-up. I haven't had problems with my ATI 7500 Radeon, but maybe I've been lucky.
The latest driver came out just a little while ago, check the ATI site again, just in case.
Maybe if you listed everything you've got... Soundcard, security keys(dongles), USB drives, etc.

I'd guess this might be because you have an Emagic Logic dongle in one of your USB ports?

The current version of V4 seems to be allergic to this dongle and the workaround is to unplug the dongle while you use V4. I'm pretty sure they said that they'd tracked down the cause of the problem now and the forthcoming update to V4 will contain a fix for it.

I'm also having problems starting the demo on my desktop - a 1.3 GHz Athlon on an nForce2 motherboard with a nVideo GForce4 440MX video card.

I don't actually get a crash, though. I see the splash screen, and then in 1-10 seconds it goes away and the vegas process is no longer running according to the task manager.

WindowsXP SP1 as well.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Sonic Foundry customer support hasn't responded to a message I sent about 36 hours ago.

I have the same problem. Win98SE, NVidia GForce2, P4 1.2Ghz. Splash screen comes up, goes away, Vegas comes up, then it's history. Program no longer responding. Reboot. It then 'works' second time around. I doubt that it's a video problem. With all the bugs being reported on VV4, this is just probably another one. Might as well go back to VV3 3.0c until they get the patches out. VV3 at least works. I am getting very disappointed over this new release.

Hi Folks,

Since nobody has mentioned it in this thread yet, does this happen if you turn off hardware accelleration in the display settings?

Hey Marty,
Is there any advantage to using any hardware accelleration on a V4 dedicated rig?
TIA,
Randy
Tyler.Durden wrote on 3/21/2003, 6:35 PM
Hi R, all...

AFAIK, HW accelleration is not needed *at all* for Vegas.

Users running Combustion or other 3D apps might want to turn on HW-accell when not using Vegas - and of course gamers like it too.

Thanks Marty...after upgrading to XP Pro I've been having some crashes after updating my display drivers (and not remembering my settings). I've been experimenting with different settings but I just totally disabled hardware acceleration on both and I'm looking forward to testing the results.
Randy
BTW, thanks for (always) being here Marty!

Hey Marty,
I've run V4 only a few minutes this morning and so far so good but I have another question that I feel is related to display: Whenever I run an instance of V4 on my 2nd (PC) monitor my external (TV) monitor only works intermittently...am I asking too much?
BTW there was some confusion regarding my rig when I posted a similar question so I'll go ahead and mention I'm using two PC monitors (on separate single head cards)and an external TV monitor via firewire.
TIA,
Randy

Hi Randy,

Are you saying when you switch external playback between the two instances there is a problem, or just having a second instance open causes the problem?

Randy Brown wrote on 3/22/2003, 8:13 AM
Actually just having one instance open (on my 2nd monitor) and hitting playback.
Thanks,
Randy
Tyler.Durden wrote on 3/22/2003, 9:20 AM
OK, I savvy...

You might check the sharing/ proximity on the second display card and yer 1394 port, methinks they are interfering due to IRQ or possibly RF (?)...

I recently upgraded to XP Pro and the only way I can find to check my IRQ assignments is in device manager but the FIRST display is sharing 16 with the 1394. If you think it is an IRQ sharing issue perhaps you could tell me how to get to the place where I can view all of the IRQ assignments. I'm also embarrased to admit that I don't know what you mean by RF.
Thanks for your patience Marty,
Randy

On XP Pro use Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information. Click on the "+" for Hardware Resources and then click IRQs. Click on a column heading to sort the entries based on that column.

Hi Randy,

RF = Radio interference

Occassionally, cards can emit enough stray RF to disturb other cards next to them.

Thanks guys,
My 2nd monitor is on IRQ 21 all by itself. My primary is sharing with the 1394 and the USB Universal Host Controller if that would make a difference. Marty, my cards are one slot apart...should I move it?
Thanks again guys,
Randy

Just to complete this train of info - I did finally get Vegas 4 running on my machine.

For some reason, Vegas is conflicting with my digital audio hardware - a PARIS system. Since I'm running XP, though, the PARIS drivers are beta anyway.

If I disable the PARIS driver, Vegas runs fine. With them enabled, Vegas never shows anything past the splashscreen.

Strange...
