Vegas Video Capture Resolution

sp_who wrote on 6/25/2003, 9:14 AM
Im having a hard time being able to change the Resolution size of a video capture.
I'm only able to capture 320x240.
I'm capturing from a Canon Digital Camcorder via Firewire.
Does Vegas Capture allow multiple size resolution capturing?
I.E 640x480 or 720x480.
or is it a limitation from the camera, or video card - any ides?

Have you checked your camera settings to see what resolution you are recording in?

In case you haven't double-checked, I thnk there is some setting in Preferences in Video Capture re: resolution. From memory, I think it set the wrong way it will capture at the resolutio of the preview screen.

Not sure of the resolution of the Camera, (if there even is a setting for that)
but I'm also using the camera to convert analog devices (I.E VCR) to pass through the camera and on through the firewire. (which works perfectly, just 1 resolution 320x240)
What resolution are you able to capture at?

Thanks.

This seems a little odd. Since you're capturing DV through firewire, you shouldn't be able to get any resolution other than 720x480, which is why there are no resolution settings available when capturing DV.

How do you know this is the size of the capture? In Vegas' explorer window when you click on the captured clip there it should tell you the resolution. Is this where you are checking it? Or are you watching the file in Windows Media Player? The problem with Media Player is that it defaults to showing DV files at half resolution.

This is an extremly stupid question maybe - but are you sure you are using the Vegas VidCap module? If you are coming in via firewire the should be no options if you choose "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR". Under "capture properties" everything is greyed (locked) and under the general video properties you get the controller.

Now if, for whatever reason, you are using another app to capture video - say a webcam capture utility or WinProducer it is possible you will have an option to capture a smaller size. But it would be hard to confuse those with VV.

Chienworks: Thank You. Your right, in the explorer of vegas Properties it streams at 740x480.
I was looking at media player properties which reads 340x240.
I guess the raw capture is at 740x480.
Thanks again.

Chien,

Just to clarify - in Video Capture, Options, Preferences, Preview, check box for "Base DV decoding resolution on preview window," is that talking about video you are playing or printing, or incoming you're capturing?

"Select this check box if you want Video Capture to decode DV files to match the current size of the Preview window. When the check box is selected, the amount of processing required by your CPU is decreased.

When the check box is cleared, Video Capture will decode DV files at full resolution and then scale them to fit the Video Preview window."

Hmmm. I had never noticed that before. From the description it seems like it only affects the preview display, and not the captured file itself. For that matter, the option is checked on my screen and i always keep my preview window at 50%, and all my DV captures are full resolution.
