For info, Matrox Digi... is a bundling of Adobe premiere "clone" with it's Matrox card. Thus it can perform various real time stuff. Me think Matrox design the card with premiere in mind.

Whereas Vegas Video is an idependent software that have an "open" interface with many DV capture card, Matrox card included.

Being independent, VV only make use of the codec of any capture card & not the cards' special features.
Eg; Though the Matrox card may be capable of real time dsiplay but VV is not able to have that feature.

The above explains why your Digi can give you real time playback on TV monitors but VV can't do it.
VV can only show you the playback 'within' the software.

But again, I believe you have noticed the 'power' of VV. To be true, Digi's software isn't that great.

Which brings to me a thought. How come Sonic Foundry hasn't team up with any hardware guys? Even the Mac is joining in the race; their Final Cut Pro software has been developed to work together with a new Matrox Card called RTMac.

I have just gone for their 'demos', frankly Final Cut Pro is still nowhere near VV. But Final Cut Pro now has the advantage of real time.

So SF, are you gonna let a great product like VV died of competition? Or are you guys in the process of finding a hardware guy? I hope SF is doing the latter. If not, very soon, VV will be in the museum regardless of how great VV used to be.

By the way, Monster, it's gonna be a big headache when you try to merge Digi & VV. Good Luck.

I don't think you can use the digi's output, but a basic OHCI card and DV camera/converter box will work. To use this feature on segments with transitons/fx/graphics , one needs to check the "recompres edited frames" box in the "prefs/external monitor" area. You will drop lots of frames if the segment has layers/fx/graphics. Not sure if "prerendering a region" would help. Might need to "render region to new track" if above doesn't work. You don't have to use the rendered clip in the final project build, delete when your done recording the VO. Check out the cool "recording into looped region multi takes" also. See takes in the manual.

Vegas Doesn't output Video in Realtime? That's news to me, I've used a Matrox Video card with Firewire connected to a Sony Camera and then the Sony Analog outs to a Video monitor and you get real-time video output. You have to click the "External monitor" Icon in the Video Preview window and tell Vegas what to use for External monitor in the preferences. I don't see why this wouldn't work the same way if you just had a video card with analog outputs with it?
