vegas video performance issues

i have recently downloaded the trial version of vegas - i
was wondering what kind of performance others were getting
with this software.

I have a athlon 750 w 128 m ram and a 32m video card with 25
m/s hdd transfer rates but when I play back a simple 1 meg
.mov file in vidvegas i can only get 7-8 fps (full res)
even in preview mode (in draft mode it does 29.97)

I'm wondering if the following are issues that may effect
performance

file type conversion

conversion of the 320*240 resolution in the original mov
file to 640*480 during playback

not using win98se

video card issues

?????

any help would be appreciated - I just finished editing a
piece on an old imac and hope to at least get similar
performance (ie full screen/res vid playback) from my vegas
system.

thanks

The slowdown you are seeing is in part due to the fact that you are
rescaling on the fly- from 320x240 to 640x480. Quicktime is usually
slower than .avi, and if you are using something other than
uncompressed you'll see a slowdown from that as well.

Since it is only a 1meg file, your best bet is to convert it to an
uncompressed avi- I converted a 320x240x15fps/"video compressor" QT
to a 320x240x15fps uncompressed avi, set my project to 640x480x29.97,
sized my video preview window to 320x240...and I'm getting 29.97
frame playback, no problem (PII 450).
