Vegas VS. Premiere

Pedro02459 wrote on 11/20/2002, 7:59 AM
Hi,
I'm currently using Premiere 6.5 with XP and am somewhat satisfied.
I'm considering switching to Vegas 3 but can't find much info on Film Effects.
Does anyone know how the effects compare to Premiere? In particular, the Film Effects.
Any other comparisons would be appreciated (ease of use, STABILITY, etc).
I'm not a professional by any means, but I do like to make shorts that look good.
Thanks.

I tried Premiere when I decided to edit my own videos... holly sh** was that complicated to me. I mean, I just wanted to CAPTURE and EDIT and the more simple, the better...no way I was gonna use this program anymore. Then I went to Vegas and ta-daaaam! I was able to make something out of it after the first tutorial.
Vegas ease of use: 10/10
Vegas stability: 9.8/10

I keep Premiere to import video strips into Photoshop, though, so I can make rotoscopy, which VV3 still can't :((((( But there's a genius named Satish who could hopefully change something here, some day, if SonicFoudry sleeps too much to make their own... :)))))))

Thanks, ease of use is an important factor to me.
How do the effects compare? I see Vegas has film grain effects, but how about the sort of dust and hairs and things like the Quicktime effects on Premiere?
How is the Titling on Vegas?? That is one thing I really do like in Premiere 6.5, the Titler.

Vegas comes with tons of great effects and transitions. There is also a low cost plug-in pack available and, of course, the great free-stuff from Satish (although I think his stuff works with Premiere as well). The Film Effect allows you to add hair, dust, scratches, jitter, and flicker, and adjust each of these from nothing to pretty extreme levels. You can also adjust the amount of grain and tint that is used and there are some pretty good presets to start with (circa 1908, circa 1980, very old, very low quality color, etc.) There are tons of other great built in effects and each one of them comes with simple to select presets and totally adjustable parameters.

HTH,

Tom

And if you have any questions, ask here and check out the time it takes for feedback... just try that with Adobe now...

It's one of the great mysteries why Premiere continues to hold its place against VV3. Vegas is soooo much easier to use it's really quite astounding. I use lots of software from music production, sampling, web graphics and full newspaper print systems and in NO system I've ever used has the difference between two programs been so huge.

Have you tried downloading the demo to get a 'feel' for yourself. I was using a combo of Cinestream/EditDV & Adobe before and now I *ONLY* use VV3. I started with the LE version for a try...I bought the DV and Audio Production Curriculum package for $49 and it was a great intro to a whole set of SoFo products and it's also like a class in editing with their products. You can then upgrade to full versions (they send you an unlock code) and you're off and running.

The free downloadable trials don't let you save anything, I believe, but you can certainly get a feel for the environment and see what the film effects will look like and play with the adjustments and be AMAZED at the RAM-based previewing so that you can see all of this without rendering.

To kinda answer your question, I have been impressed with the film effect and all of the other effects in VV3, but I've never used those effects in Premiere so I can't do a comparison for you. Sorry.

Hope that helps!

"I see Vegas has film grain effects, but how about the sort of dust and hairs"

If you check out Chienworks video sharing site, you'll see alot of different things that are done with VV3, including my very short/very basic clip using film grain.

Thanks all.
Great forum here. I think I will check out the demo. The one thing I've never liked about Premiere is the interface. For those of us who aren't "graphic designers" and haven't been using Adobe software since birth, the basic interface is terrible.
Muchas Gracias!

I have been using Premiere for about 4 years. Lots of times, when it kept crashing on me, I wanted to throw it all out the window, but after all, I spent nearly $600 on it. Then a friend showed me Vegas, on first sight it looked OK, mind you I haven't spend much time on it yet, what bugs me is to go and spend another lump of cash for maybe about the same.
How about making it cheaper, that could pull me over, (maybe).

How is $270?

Go to Sonic Foundry's website and purchase Video Factory for $70.
Then, once you receive the e-mail with the serial number, "Upgrade" to VV3 for $200.

An even cheaper option is if you are a student - the purchase price for students is around $175.

Student price can be as low as $147, including shipping, if you hit it right.
