Vegas will not open/render audio stream from .avi file

Hello,
I'm trying to incorporate a co-worker's video (done in Windows Movie Maker 2) into a project I'm working on. When I try to import the .avi files, the video comes through fine, but Vegas stumbles on the audio portion. It will not render the audio (or build the proxy file) and will not play it. However, the file plays back fine in Windows Media Player. The message that Vegas (and Sound Forge) displays is something like this: "the format of the stream is not consistent throughout the file"

Does anyone know how to get around this? I'm trying to rip the audio from the file in Windows Media Encoder but I would rather do everything in Vegas.

Thanks,
bombaj

I'm pretty sure Windows Movie Maker generates "Type 1" .AVI file and, as far as I know, Vegas will only work with "Type 2" files. Windows Media Player will play both types. I've got a deadline breathing down my neck at the moment, so I don't have the time to go into the details, but one of the major differences between Type 1 & 2 files is how the audio is stored in the .AVI file. I suggest you do a search on the Internet. Maybe someone knows of a converter out there somewhere.
