Vegas won't execute or run anymore

TimT wrote on 11/18/2002, 7:34 AM
When I double click any icon to start VV3 the startup screen flashes for a second then I get nothing. Will not run. I've called tech support for Sonic Foundry and they have not been able to help. Nothing has been loaded onto the computer since it ran last. I've gone back to a previous System Setup when VV3 ran and that doesn't work. I've uninstalled it, defragmented the disk, then reinstalled. Nothing. I've reloaded XP over it'self and nothing. Any help would be appreciated. EVERYTHING else on the computer works fine except this one program. Please help short of reformatting and starting over. The program has worked fine for several months without problem.

Hi Tim,

You might try turning off that darn hardware accelleration...

That seems to blow-up Vegas more than anything.

Do you still have that Video Wave program installed? Say it ain't so!
Do you have any other 3rd party plugins(audio)?

What questions/tips did SoFo ask/suggest when you called?
Since you've done the un/re-install of VV & repair XP install, then maybe it's something in the registry or a piece of hardware/driver.

What do have for hardware peripherals?
Software?

I have a SanDisk SmartMedia Reader, Wingman FF Wheel, Epson 1280 Printer, and Epson 1650 Scanner. I've got a cable modem and Netgear router. All were installed prior to VV3.

I'll look into turning off the accellerator. Din't think of that.

SoFo guys went through a bunch of stuff, having me delete most things running in the background, etc. I've printed out copies of different codes for them as well. Not sure exactly where all we've been as I'm not a "guts" guru.

Tim,
I had something like this a while back - I narrowed it down to a corrupt user profile/registry. Don't worry - easily fixable! Do this: create yourself a new user account in Control Panel > User Accounts (make sure it's an admin account); Log in under the new account and try running Vegas.

If it works then you can transfer your settings from your old Profile to the new one using Programs > Accessories > System Tools > "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" (i.e. log in under the old account, back up the settings and then log in under the new one and restore). You can then rename the old account, rename the new one, and then delete the old one when you're sure you've got everything (make sure you back up My Docs if necessary etc, etc).

Thank you so much, it worked perfectly. I've been screwing with this for 3 days. I owe you.

The new account has worked great, but now VV3 and only VV3 is not executing again from the new user account. Is this a VV3 problem or is this a XP problem? All other programs work fine.

Thanks again.

Hi TimT!

I will informe you that i have exactly the same problem that you describe with VV3.
VV3 run fine some time but then it stopped to work.
I have tried everything i could think of (the same as you describe) but the only thing that worked for me was a clean Win XP install, but only for a while because the same thing happend after using VV3 some time.
I read DuncanS reply (Thanks a lot) and now i have managed to start VV3 again from the new account, but im afraid the same thing going to happend again soon.
When i double clic on the icon VV3 startupscreen flash for a second then it disappear and nothing happends.
I have foundaut that if i right click on the icon and choose run.. insted i could find a screen telling me: The system is low on memory. You may be be able to reduse memory by closing other applications.

I have 768 Mb DDR ram on an Athlon XP 2.4 Ghz and only using 186 Mb so i cant see that i have low memory ??
Yesterday i contacted the support but i have not get any answer yet.
I will following this thread and hope that we could figure out whats the problem.

Chrille, we have exactly the same problem. I right clicked on the VV3 run icon and get the same low memory error. I'm runing an AMD 1800 with 512 mb ram and with nothing else running still get the same error. I can run then start Photoshop with the max amount of windows open with no problem so I know my system is not low on memory. I will contact Sonic Foundry to.

Well, another 30 minutes on the phone to SF and basically, they have no clue why, how, etc. Vegas wont' execute any more. Since it's only happened to a few of us, with only me having called them, there is no real urgency on their part to help find a fix. If anybody else has experienced this problem, please call them and let them know. Thanks.

You haven't turned off any OS services, have you? Specifically, I'm thinking of Windows Terminal Service, but others may affect this as well.

Is there plenty of free space on all of your drives?

Have you tried holding down Ctrl+Shift while launching (this will reset ALL of your preferences and window positions, but if it's a bad pref that's causing the hang during launch, it would be worth it).

Is your DirectX installation up-to-date?

Do you have any new DirectX plug-ins?

Try unplugging the SmartMedia device; there are known problems with scanning the wide-SCSI bus with some smart media devices.

Have you already tried the full uninstall / reinstall effort?

I've turned all OS services without success

40 GB's of free space on drive

350 MB's of Ram left free

I have not tried holding down Ctl Shift during VV3 lauch. Will this only reset all preferences for that user account, or is it a global..all user accounts affected?

DirectX is up to date

No new plug-ins

Tried unpluging Smart Media, uninstalling VV3, wiping all old references of VV3 with the new Windows download for complete uninstalls, reinstalled VV3..no
difference.

If I create another user accout, VV3 will work and execute fine for a week or so, then the same problem.

Will keep trying.

HAve you guys by some chance run a Microsoft update, some time back i runa Microsoft update (Read: Hot Update) after i ran that i got lots of problem with some of my softwares and also logging off and shutting down computer. However this was before my Vegas time, so if that would fail my Vegas from loading i cant tell.

But if you have installed some HOT Fix or updates, check out. And also, if you are running Windows XP, have you installed SP1 or not?

I dont want to messup more with you guys, but it might help to run a memory manager of some kind, like CacheMan at http://www.outertech.com/

I dont know if it support XP tho.
