Vegas4 won't load now - low memory - ideas?

Hi - I just installed Norton Systemworks2005 and now Vegas 4 won't load ... I tried uninstalling it but V4 Still won't load ... any ideas?

I have a p3 2.8 gig cpu running win2k ... Vegas 4 worked fine til now .. any suggestions? With 1 gig of RAM, it's always been enough ... not sure why this error message now..

"An error occurred starting Vegas. The system is low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usage by closing other applications".

Using Ctrl-Alt-Delete and closing everything .. and CPU usage only shows 2% .. still vegas won't load..

appreciate any suggestions, short of using V5/winxp/new pc ... :p

My only guess now is, I'll go add another gig of memory..

appreciate it folks.. any ideas?

ken

Checking w/ windows task manager, says

Mem Usage: 276096/ 2519492 K

anyways, appreciate any tips on what to do ... gotta render!

wow, that's a bummer....I do not use any Norton products, and have heard that others have had problems truly uninstalling them. Can you check the processes tab on task manager to see what is eating up the ram? If it is any process that looks like norton or systemworks or whatever, then it is not completely uninstalled.

<edit> I do use the AV product, but not on my video box.

I suspect it's the new "goback" program that I installed w/it, that's causing the memory conflict.. as it's the only remaining program that's different.

Fortunately, I just "ghosted" 2 spare drives two days ago (it took me 14 hours to completely uninstall goback!) to allow me to do that...

Just swapped drives, v4 still works fine from the ghosted drive ... so that's good.

Now I'll hook up the "Norton Systemworks 2005'd" drive as a slave drive and copy over all my data /mailbox files (headache!) that have changed, and it should be good to go.

I need to go buy another pc for "renders only" anyways, this last episode convinces me.

Hey any ideas for a "dream machine" up to 2K that would be good for a render pc?

build or buy? If you buy, get one with

1. The biggest cpu you can afford,
2. The most RAM (at least 1 gig)
3. More than one hard drive.

If you build your own, there's lots more factors to consider, like motherboard type, etc.

<edit> Sorry, I see where you said you were going to buy. I like Dell, but I don't know if you can buy them without monitors and all the extras they include or if you may need that. I'm sure you'll get several replies from others that have bought and are happy.

I like building my own w/ASUS m/bs and thinking a 3.4 gig cpu .. good ideas.. though I'm in full steam ahead "production mode" right now, don't want to take a lot of time to go build up a pc again..

heck, maybe I'll just go to compusa/bestbuy and grab whatever fastest pc they have for a render pc, and put one of my ghosted drives in it .. and use the built in one for a data drive..

anyways .. thanks ... good thing I just ghosted 2 drives, or I'd be sol right about now..
(I use acronis.com 's utility , works great)

It's unlikely that will work. The windows O/S is bound to recognize that it is being loaded on an entirely different machine from the one it was installed on (it checks) and it likely will not allow you to run. In any case... there are also motherboard specific drivers that get installed onto the O/S drive... and you would need to install thise also (not a deal-breaker... but I think the other problem is anyway)

Hmm you're probably right ... ah well. It would be nice to be able to just ghost a drive and drop it as the boot drive into another pc (without having to have an identical pc m/b etc hardware)..

appreciate the tip.
.

well for a render pc, I suppose just installing vegas on that one along w/all my a/v apps would take awhile .. then just using a usb external drive to work on files..

speaking of which, I really dislike winxp (which is preloaded into every new pc), I like win2k pro better, any ideas as to if Vegas 6 etc will be winXP only, or will be able to run in win2k?

Go to Compusa and get the tech to get you one of those wintec build you a pc. I got a monster system from them for 2400 hundred bucks.

Anyone else have a "low memory" error loading Vegas 4, with a gig of RAM on a 2.8ghz machine?

Those numbers would seem to indicate the sum of your physical memory plus your virtual memory (swap file). I don't know if Win2K allows you to manage your own swap file as WinXP does but if it does then try increasing it's size. Just double the default value if you can spare the disk space. If that works then be sure to defrag the drive with the swap file to make it contiguous on the disk.

Videoguys put together a Hot Rod system for $2000 built around the ASUS P5AD2 Premium mobo in their second Do It Yourself challenge. You can read about it here: . Just buy the same parts and assemble.

PC World also has a good article on with recommendations on parts to build 4 models: Power PC, Quiet PC, Value PC, and Media PC. I always build Power PC’s with plenty of fans but it was interesting to see the different selections of parts for building a Quiet PC. I may try that next time.

I just built a PC for my brother-in-law using an ASUS Micro ATX form factor and I like how small the case is and how quiet one 120mm fan can be. There was still plenty of room for additional hard drives and it ran surprisingly cool.

thanks - great tips..!

will try it Blues, re larger swap size + defrag to get it contiguous... super idea.. and I'll make the change in sys config too ... current size is about 1.7 gigs I think ..

btw I like closed em7 walking blues lines myself (I play sax/keys) :p

re m/bs, I've tried them all, I like asus the best ... I've never had a problem w/asus boards, but I have with tyan, intel and others..

I agree, I like asus the best, and that is what the VideoGuys used in their PC
