I think Vegas 6 will be fine as soon as they release the first update. (I'm hoping Vegas 6.0b will be out before the upgrade special expires.) The new features are compelling, they just need to work out the major bugs. Then I'm sold.

Well... I've been using V6 and DVDA3 for the past few weeks... and delivered several projects in that time also. I've made use of many of the new features and only encountered some odd behavior a couple of times. For me... the V6 experience has been excellent.

Of course I do have V4 and V5 on my system... so I have something to fall back on (although not needed to do that so far).

I upgraded from Vegas 4 & I'm happy with VEgas 6. But, most of the new features (besides the media manager) in Vegas are more useful if you've got a higher end system & do HD stuff. Even though I don't it's forseable that by next year I'll be using those features so I got it.

I'd suggust oyu download the demo & see if you use the features.

Yes... been using it quite a bit... especially for tagging all the clips I had from that Newport Beach Film Festival.

I'm actually getting kind of excited about the Media Manager. Spent a couple hours this morning creating new Media libraries and then deleting them, just to practice going through the steps. So far I've decided on separate audio and video media libraries. Next step will be to learn how to incorporate offline Media into the libraries.

On my Athlon 64 3200 laptop the media manager seems to load quite speedily, maybe taking an extra 5 seconds at most. I'm still looking for how to keep the SQL server thing running full-time in the background. I know it was in the posts somewhere, but if anyone knows and can tell me I'd appreciate it.

Unless you only use Vegas occasionally, you probably want the sqlserver running in the background so that Vegas loads faster the next time you start it. I’m in and out of Vegas all day so having the sqlengine load once saves a lot of time. In fact, if you have a dedicated NLE machine, you might want to go into the control panel and set the sqlengine to load automatically with Windows. This way it starts when Windows does and every invocation of Vegas 6 will be faster. (if you also use ACID pro 5 this will speed that startup as well)

If you want to have the sqlengine unload when Vegas 6 does use:

1. In the Media Manager select Media Library Actions > Options... (it's the last icon on the top-right)
3. Select the General tab if its not already the current tab
3. Check Shut down database services on exit (increases start time)
4. Press OK

That will unload the sqlengine every time you exit Vegas.

When is Sony going to release version 6b??????? Anyone?
Paul_Holmes wrote on 5/1/2005, 10:26 AM
Thanks, Johnny. Did what you said. Now it doesn't unload when Vegas quits and I've got it going from system startup.

Paul, sorry I read your post and thought you wanted to unload it every time. I’m glad you figured out how to do the opposite from my post (my bad). For others who want to know how to load the sqlengine on startup of Windows:

1. From the Windows Desktop select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
2. Select the service called MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR
3. Right-click on it and select Properties... from the context menu
4. In the Properties dialog change the Startup type: to Automatic
5. Press OK

Also make sure Shut down database services on exit is Unchecked in the Media Library Actions > Options... > General tab. Hope this helps the next person.

why wait until Vegas 6b to buy through the upgrade?

You can purchase 6A now and wait to install. Once 6B is released, download it, install, and use your serial number from your 6A purchase.

As far as I understand, your serial number is not "locked" to the CDrom if you buy the boxed one. Its good for any version of 6 you install.
