Anyone?

Check the file size. It's possible your download was incomplete. I know its redundant, but I would re-download and try again. I had the same thing to happen.
FrankLP* wrote on 1/20/2007, 7:48 PM
It looks like it all made it (file size = 137,465). It's wierd...other exe files run fine, but the vegas exe files won't run. I've downloaded the file a few times with no success running it,....I'll try to run it from the server (again). Puzzling....
FrankLP* wrote on 1/20/2007, 7:58 PM
Well...it didn't work trying to run it from the download page (server). Any other thoughts as to what is causing this? Thanks.

I just checked mine and, under Properties, it says
Size: 134 MB (140,763,192 bytes)
Size on Disk:134 MB (140,767,232 bytes)
Try a download from the Sony server and see if that's any better.

"(file size = 137,465)"

It's suposed to be about 140,767,232 (size on disk)

140,763,192 (file size)

Downloaded from server, but outcome is no different. Still shows 137,465KB file size (saving to desktop). FYI - my desktop stats are:

15 Files, 2 Folders
Size: 134 MB (140,833,880 bytes)
Size On Disk: 134 MB (140,873,728 bytes)

I still think it's weird that other exe files run, but Sony's do not. Is there a Sony Vegas installer file I'm missing perhaps?

Frank, I assume you deleted the original file or saved new new locations with each subsequent download? Just checking.

Did you recently change any settings on your network adapter? Your problem can occur if you force full-duplex or some other settings in the device options on network adapters. Try downloading another larger setup file from shareware.com or somewhere to test for corruption with other newly downloaded files.

Also, try turning off your antivirus software, any 3rd party firewall, and re-download. Un-do any overclocking you might have. If it repeats on other newly downloaded files, then you could have bad RAM, network card, or an overly fragmented disk. Try running defrag and "Error Checking" on your disk.
FrankLP* wrote on 1/24/2007, 11:21 AM
Thanks for the response Wes.

I don't believe that I have changed any settings on the network adapter. I did however recently add an HP Media Vault to the network.

I've tried turning off Norton and all other security stuff to no avail. And I also un-did the 3% over clocking that I had tried.

Also, I have found that I am experiencing the same problem with other recently downloaded executables.

I am thinking about upgrading the OS to XP Professional. Will this help or hurt?

Do you have IE7 installed??

I know the IE7 is causing ALL KINDS of download/install headaches all over the place. If you IE7... GET RID of it.
John_Cline wrote on 1/24/2007, 12:38 PM
The .EXE I downloaded from the update page on the Sony website failed to run. I then downloaded the file via FTP from Sony's server and it worked fine.

ftp://download.sonypictures.com

The file is in the "current" folder.

I am indeed running IE7...didn't think it would be the cause...has anyone on here successfully downloaded and run this file while running IE7? If not, I'll try going back to IE6x.

John, I'll give your suggestion a try too. I'll get to it later tonight and let you know what happens (or doesn't happen).

Thanks.

I've got IE7 and it's working fine. It's not great but it isn't screwing up downloads/installs by any means.

Re-download and try again - if it doesn't work, you have some serious issues with your sys.

Well... I know that the people with IE7 trying to install the new Pinnacle Studio 10.7 patch have had all kinds of download headaches... and once they got through that, they had further install problems because the studio needs free outside access which IE7 was in some way interfering with (has something to do with the AD blocking I believe)

well if in doubt, download/install firefox.

Please forgive -- no offense intended -- but you are trying the newly downloaded file each time... right?

Check task mgr -- if every time you double click the file installshield or whatever starts up, but you don't see the dialog, could be that's what's broken -- wouldn't be the 1st time.
FrankLP* wrote on 1/25/2007, 11:01 AM
I didn't have time to try John's suggestuon last night, but will try later.

Mikkie,
No offense taken. Yes I'm trying the newly downloaded file each time. When I double clicked the exe file and there's a brief second that the hour glass pops up, then it stops. Task Manager shows nothing running (except Task Manager) and basically no activity.

Perhaps it's time to reinstall XP. Would upgrading to XP Pro fix this?
FrankLP* wrote on 1/25/2007, 5:40 PM
I downloaded from the ftp sight, but no success in running the file. This is starting to feel more and more like a system issue. Does anyone think upgrading to XP Pro will clean this up?

Took a quick look at the vegas download file -- it says it's an SFXPack installer. All it does is extract the setup files to a folder, then calls the msi install file. There's a type of file compression called winace -- competes with winzip, rar etc. The company, winace.com, makes SFX Factory to create installers, & I *think* the result used that SFXPack name. I'm relying a bit on memory...

They have a download for winace, and used to make a free version you might be able to find. Either way you may be able to open the Vegas download, which would verify the file's OK, & would hopefully allow you to extract the setup files. These normally go in C:\Program Files\Sony Setup\Vegas 7.0 ,,, Running setup from there should work.

If you can't open the downloaded file in winace, perhaps contact Sony Media &/or winace?
FrankLP* wrote on 1/26/2007, 8:23 PM
Thanks mikkie.

Do you think the SFXPack would also be the cause of other (non-Sony) executables not running? And as I delve deeper into this, I keep finding more (newer) troubles. I just found that my "Add or Remove Programs" file doesn't work either. Sigh.....this is going to drive me crazy.

Two suggestions

1. Try right clicking on the file and go to "run as" and see if you are running the program as an administrator.

2. Try moving the file to another hard disk with more space and try to execute it there. If you have anti virus software try to turn off the auto protect.
Wes C. Attle wrote on 1/28/2007, 6:51 AM
Frank, this sounds like a hardware problem. Either RAM, network card, or less likely hard disk.

Try removing your your RAM memory sticks one at a time, doing a new file download each time. You could have one bad memory stick, so you will need to test. However, some systems like Intel I think require two sticks just to boot. So this might not be so easy to test unless you can swap some memory sticks from another computer that uses the same type.

You could also download memtest86 (www.memtest86.com), or SuperPI, or Prime95 to test your RAM. Might be easier.

If your memory looks good, then there is a good chance that the problem is your network adapter. The good news is that you can buy a new PCI network card for $10 to $20.

I had a similar problem some weeks ago

From another post of mine....

Also the startup of vegas 7 is solved ! the vcomp.dll was missing into the WinSxS directory, I found the missing dependency monitoring the vegas startup with a file monitor in real-time.
Copying that file under the winsxs/x86_Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0ee63867 directory, now i'm happy again !
I got the vcomp.dll from the vegas directory.

Now you can inspect why the startup fails, with some sysinternals tools (www.sysinternals.com) as the file/registry monitor, to understand what the installer it's really doing (or not).
It's a technical job, but you can find these useful int the user battle against windws.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be able to give them a try over the next few nights. Any other thoughts are welcome and appreciated. I'll check back later and let you know how things are going (or not going).

My first thought: Go to a DIFFERENT machine to download it! Work, friend's house, neighbor's house - anywhere - just a different machine. Then burn it to a CD or move it to a pen drive to get it home.
