Vegas8 64 bit crashes I7 prosc

Excuse the lack of techy stuff, I barely grasp part of this, but see where folks are having render problems, as am I. Loading files from Sony SR11 camcorder taken as HQ SD (mpg2?) files. 22 minutes, 55 files, 1.35GB, each creates a Sfk0 and Sfk1 when opening in Vegas in 3 separate Projects. Try to open them all in one Project and Vista (Sony) locks up. My last trial I pre-rendered as I loaded all into the project and Windows said Vegas failed and shut it down. My work around is to render each group as a new ntsc mpeg2 file than finally edit those all in one Project. Anyway, am on the watch to see what anyone might comment or suggest, especially if this is the way of life for my brand new built PC. Intel I7, 6GB ram, two WD 10K hard drives, Navita 712mb video. All that is nifty to write down, but apparently doesn't work much better than my old P4 which also crashes. Any help re: am I missing something, realizing I am and old dude and probably out in left field. Thanks, be kind.

Hello,
First let me say that you are not out in left field. This is a very common problem that tons of people are dealing with... I was one of those people.
The biggest thing that you are facing is 64bit. Regretably there is hardly any software out there right now that functions well on these mashines. In a recent conversation with tech support even Sony admits that 8.1 is a desaster.
So first I would say to revert back to 8.0c for now. (remember this is just my suggestion and what worked for me). I cannot, in any way, get MPEG 2 to work well with 64 bit. Period. I have done simple projects with hardly any effects and was able to manage some what... but still things got a little whacked.
So you could switch to 32 bit but then you will not be able to use the 6GB's of RAM that you have and would kinda go into unknown terretory.
The only known solution that I have found that is concrete is coverting your files to AVI. You can do this easily with a software from Peachrock called Veggie Tool kit. (google it). It costs $70 and is well worth it and very easy to use (has lots of other uses) as well. Once you start working with AVI you will have no problems at all.
The only disadvantage is the large size of AVI and obviously you will not be working with HD.

The only other thing I can say is that a new version of Vegas (9) will be released in a few weeks and maybe that will work better?

Best wishes,

Josh

Thankyou so much for your response, especially caution about trying 32 bit and reaching for the unknown. I will try the old version and see how that goes AS WELL AS using avi files converted. If the definition is as good as my older avi camcorder, then I will be pleased. I really upgraded for faster rendering and these Hard drives really fly. Thanks again.

I don't have any problems with files from my Sony SR11 and Vegas 8.1 on XP64 - import the files to the computer using the tools that came on the CD with the camera. Then the Explorer tab in Vegas to find the files you want and drag them to the timeline. Don't try to drag all the individual files associated with the events to the time line - Under the explorer tab if you see the file you want, drag it directly to the time line, you will only see what Vegas wants you to work with not the rest and Vegas will deal with the other files as needed.

Rendering works fine unless I try to render to AVCHD 1920x1040 on 8.0c - that won't complete a render of any of my videos longer than about 1 minute before crashing. However ussing AVCHD 1440x1080 on 8.1 the rendering works fine with file properties set to 8 bit, upper field first, and I turn audio off under the custom tab - just render the audio separately. MPEG2 renders work fine also as do AVC - both of which you can use the 32 bit setting under properties. Comparing all 3 rendered formats - the AVCHD produces the best video quality and smaller file - even though it's lower res than the AVC or MPEG2 renders. hope this helps, don't give up on it - Vegas 8.1 works with AVCHD from your camera very well.

Interesting - I use a Sony SR-12, and run Vista 64 on both my laptop and PC without any issues in Vegas 8.1 - seems to work very well.

Have more issues with 8.0C - lots of crashes - but 8.1 works fine.

I import the files directly from the camera (.mts) via Windows Explorer and can open as many files as I need in Vegas - without any issues.

For me, 8.1 and Vista 64 have worked flawlessly together. Very stable.

My processor is the Q9650 (3Ghz) with 8gb RAM
