VegasPro v21/108 = Speech to Text crash

jxb wrote on 10/16/2023, 9:15 AM

Trying out speech to text conversion using a simple MP3 file without any video. It works fine until about 90% through and crashes with following error. I have tried several times and same problem occurs.I am logged into Vegas Hub. I am able to save what it has converted so far to either a text or subtitle file or import into the project as subtitle file.

Any thoughts please?

Ta John

Does the same behavior occur with PCM files?

Apologies - it is a WAV file, not MP3. Did not look at the extension and assumed the latter.

Has anyone else seen this problem as repeatable every time on the WAV file? I will report to Magix in the meantime. Thanks - John

@jxb Are you using a trial version of Vegas Pro? If so, is your audio file longer than 2 minutes. Usually with trial version, you would get a different error message than what you got if trying to render video longer than 2 minutes or about. I've no experience processing just audio for speech to text. But I figure we could eliminate that as a problem. And then it could be a problem with authenticating your license, the server may have been down or had a problem.

No full 365 license. File is about 45m long and gets to about 40 minutes before crashing. Tried over several days and shows logged into the hub ok. I can access other aspects of that ok.

Speech to text is only enabled for 365 users.

Yes I have a full 365 license.

Thanks for clarifying. I just did a test with VP 21 to see if maybe the server is down.

I used a 30 minute wav file. It completed though gave this error message:

In general I didn't have any luck getting speech to text to do files over 40 minutes and as such stopped using it for interview transcriptions (usually 1 hour length). It would stop the analysis around 40 minutes. I use Faster Whisper through SubtitleEdit now for long interviews and sometimes use VEGAS Speech to text captions for the finished file.

@jxb Probably something network related (maybe local, ISP, webservice, your HW, power saving) times out due to "longer" length/duration of file (and subsequent time it takes to analyze on the server side). I would check your PC or laptop network device power saving settings.

Or maybe there is some maximum audio file size or use time agreement between Vegas and host server for text to speech- speech to text that we do not know of (I suppose Microsoft's Azure).

I would split up a 1 hour audio in 2 or 3 parts and try again.

To save time you may also split the audio in 2 parts, start 2 sessions of Vegas simultaneously and start speech to text in both versions, one handling part 1, the other part 2. You may cut time in halve this way...

VEGAS never really does more than 40 minute files so if you want to use it for long files I'd chop it up into several parts.

It doesn't appear to be anything local network or system related.
