The velocity envelope allows changing the speed of a clip from -100% (full speed reverse) to 0% (freeze frame) up to 300% (3 times normal speed). For more information, look at the issue of the Vegas Tips, Tricks, and Scripts newsletter that deals with changing the speed of a clip.

The concept behind a velocity envelope is to allow apparent speed change over time. Click Insert, Video Envelopes, Event Velocity. Move the resulting line up to increase playback speed, down to lower. You can also stop and reverse. Right clicking (or double clicking) on the line allows you set points to more accurately set speed between points. Negative values plays in reverse. There's a good deal more under envelopes, so no need to paraphase it here. Envelopes only alter speed, not time.

To alter time (meaning adding or remove to the length some event plays) you drag the right end of the clip. Drag right while holding down the Ctrl key to extend time, drag left to decrease time. You can combine the two methods adding a velocity envelope to stretch or shrink some event over time.

How can I reverse a clip and not have the duration change?

Set it to -100% (minus 100 per cent)
