Very basic Newbie HD Capture Questions

Just making the leap into capturing and working with HD from within Vegas and have some very basic question re the capturing controls; when I play the footage, the shuttle slider is just about pegged to the right and not in the middle. Is this normal? Second, to the right of the slider is a horizontal panel that has three indents on it, what is this for? Also, is the whole capture experience for HD a bit fluky (functions lag, menus pop up when not called for, etc) or may something be wrong on my computer end of things? Sorry if these are too basic but after searching I couldn't find the answers in the books or online. And finally, does anyone know of a comprehensive thread or article on capturing and working with HD within Vegas, the book only has a few pages.
Many thanks in advance,
Sprague

Thanks for getting back to me on this. Yup, have that and as wonderful of a book that it is, I found that it didn't cover all that much for HD... or maybe I'm a bit thick!

Your experience with using Vegas to capture HDV is pretty much in line with mine. I use a moderatly priced VCR, a Sony M15U. The transport controls in Vegas's capture work rather oddly, I can get them to indicate the VCR is both stopped and playing, not the thing to fill one for confidence I know. However really it doesn't matter as all you need to be able to do is to rewind the tape, get the VCR to play and once you get vision press the Record icon and Vegas will capture as it should.
A couple of tips for capturing HDV. Your camera or VCR should be set to HDV, NOT Auto, before you start Vegas. Having the device in Auto causes the firewire interface to change between DV and HDV when you go from blank tape to recorded tape. This confounds Windows (and OSX!). Never start capturing until you get clean vision from the VCR regardless if you're capturing DV or HDV.

Thanks for getting back to me Bob, this really helps. One other thing that has me completely confounded are all the different formats to render out as and then to burn as. I shot in 1080 24fps, 16:9 and edited in HD. What I aim to do is deliver the best quality 16:9 picture on DVD. What format do you render out as and then what format do you burn as? (Hope I'm not being a pest with these question but Vegas offers a ton of ways of rendering and burning and not a lot of info on what each one does and why you'd use it).
Thanks again,
Sprague
