Very new to DV editing... capture question.

Hi,

I just started using Vegas video today... I have a PIII 1.0Ghz with 512mb RAM, a GEForce 2 video card with 64mb RAM and a dedicated (for capture) 40gb ATA/133 hard drive. After capturing about 1 minute, I stop the caputure and a message comes up sayiny some frames were dropped. About 10 for every minute. I've tried capturing with no audio or video preview and that didn't work. I also have all apps killed and the network disconnected. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

What are you using to capture, firewire or analog capture card? What version of Vegas and are you using the Vegas VidCap utility or another program?

FWIW, analog captures tend to drop frames in the beginning of the capture, but should stop dropping within seconds.

USB devices? I'm no expert but I do know that when recording audio to disk all the advice seems to be to pull the USB devices out to prevent unwanted occasional clicks and pops. Maybe the same with DV capture?

I'm using an adaptec firewire card... I'm using vegas 4.0 and when i capture, I just go into vegas 4.0 and choose "file" ---> "capture video". Thanks!

Hi josh,

A number of things:

- Have you configured Vegas to use the 40GB drive for capture? If not it is probably using your C: drive.
- Is your 40GB drive a master on an IDE channel?
- If you're not using WinXP have you enabled DMA for the 40GB drive?

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Scott,

I have configured Vegas to use the 40GB drive, I think. I just noticed there are two places to do this... When you first go into Vegas, I chose "file" ---> "properties" and set the 40GB drive in the audio and video sections. I did not, however, do this once in the capture portion of the program. Which one is correct?

The drive is master on the primary IDE (I'm using a scsi drive to boot) and it is enable for DMA in Windows 2000... (in device manager, under ide controllers, right?). Thanks a lot!

You need to set the capture path in the Disk Management tab of the Options->Preferences menu item in the Capture App

Also, Get the model number of the Adpatec Firewire card and look it up on Adaptec's site to make sure it is OHCI compliant. If it isn't, this could be the source of your dropped frames.

Hey Scott >If you're not using WinXP have you enabled DMA for the 40GB drive?<
Does this mean if one has XP that DMA should NOT be enabled?
TIA,
Randy

"Does this mean if one has XP that DMA should NOT be enabled?"

Different set up but still uses DMA, still need to make sure it's enabled by going to the device manager and checking the properties for the IDE channel rather then the drives themselves. Unlike earlier versions of windows, there is no enable DMA checkbox but a dropdown choice that says use DMA if available, & below that the settings that xp has detected for that drive.

If it isn't what it should be, 'bout the only thing that helps is trying to update the driver for the ide channel, change the driver and change it back, & as a last resort, remove the channel and reinstall. Also, with newer drives going up to UDMA 5 & 6 etc., if you're only showing UDMA 4 for example, make sure your M/Board handles 5 or 6 or whatever...

Hi g_randybrown, no I didn't mean that. I've noticed that WinXP seems to always use DMA if available unless you explicitly turn it off. I've set up quite a few PC's for friends/family with XP and I always check DMA and have always found that XP was already using it. Apologies for any confusion 8o)

Hi Scott,

I tried what you recommended and I captures 2.5 hours with only 6 dropped frames in the beginning... thanks for the help everyone!!!

Hi Josh,

Great to hear you got you capture working. If you got dropped frames at the beginning that could indicate a small amout of disk fragmentation at that part of your capture disk. Video drives tend not to need defragmenting much but it's worth giving your video disk a defrag just to ensure you get the best out of it.

Cheers,

Scott
