Very nice plug for Vegas in PC Magazine

Okay, my topic line is not completely accurate. It was actually a very nice plug for Vegas Movie Studio 4, but I figure any positive exposure for that product is a solid plug for the big program, too.

Any of you who have read Bill Machrone's columns in PC Magazine recently know that he has lamented the difficulty of using common NLE and Authoring programs to efficiently produce solid DVDs. But now he's happy.

He mentions in the current issue on p.67 that he was responsible for producing a Christmas show for his church, and tried Vegas Movie Studio 4 based on strong recommendations from some readers. He says, "...I was eager to try it. I immediately liked the way the screen split into a timeline view with several video and audio tracks...Then I did the dramatic-impact zooms and pans. Vegas made it easy to control the beginning and ending targets and size, as well as the pace...The video took about 15 minutes to render, and I was able to burn it without fuss. This was such an (sic) contrast with my prior experiences that I could hardly believe it."

You can read previous columns by Bill Machrone here, but the current one doesn't show up there yet. They want you to buy the magazine, after all.

Kudos for Vegas. Great product.

It was an excellent plug but also a bit discouraging. PC magazine is know for rating and reviewing products. They are supposed to try things first and tell the public about it. PC Mag has not included Vegas at the top of their ratings and at times has failed to even mention Vegas. I suppose that would be OK if Vegas were being fully and properly reviewed. But Bill Machrone said he found out about the virtues of Vegas from his readers! Like I said, it is discouraging when a review magazine's featured writer has to find out about good products from the readers rather than the other way around.

PC Magazine used to have good quality reviews, but in the last few years they have gone downhill fast.

They make astonishing statements about all kinds of products they review, indicating that they never understood how the products should be used.

Sad.

Now if Sony were to place some ads, that could be a different story.

I was wined and dined by their veeps when they wanted me to place full page ads, and it was my personal impression that the firewall between the ad sales department and the editorial department had some leaks.

It's good and bad that Vegas get's more attention... well, not SOOO bad. It's just that here in Hawaii, everyone's so high (literally at times, hehe) on FCP. When people see my work, they flip out and wonder how they could acheive same results on FCP, not knowing I did it on Vegas. Vegas is my little secret... heh.

I agree with your last sentence, lets not loose our competitive edge.
Quite apart from our advantage in terms of creativity and improved workflow unlike the Macolites we don't have to buy a G6 just to run OSX6/Vegas 6.

Something to keep in mind is that, in general, the more advertising you buy in mags this, the more likely your product is to get a rave review in that same mag.

(This is especially true in the gaming industry, so I'm assuming this is the case in the more general PC market.)

I seriously doubt we will ever see Vegas 6/7/8/etc.. on a Mac ever. To try and dent that market that Apple has a stranglehold on for their OS would be foolish on Sony's part. Conceed the Mac market and use the money that would have gone to development and pour it into the PC design for 64bit processing.
