VERY Slow load times or takes minutes to load when switchin between apps

I have searched these forums and found similar issues, but nothing has worked.
I have Vegas 4.0b on an XP Pro P4 2.2Ghz 1GB PC2700 and a Matrox Dual Head (G40).
Using local IDE(100 no RAID) drive for all video / temp / etc.

I cannot figure out why it takes 2-3 minutes to either load the app OR just to bring it back up after switching focus to another app within windows.
It is super frustrating and there is no real explanation other than this (maybe):

It seems that Vegas reads each of my MPEG-2 files (I import anywhere from 10 to 75 on the high end). Each no longer than 30 seconds, usually about 10-15 seconds.
When Vegas creates these it also creates 1 file per MPEG file.
It seems that everytime I leave the app and come back it reads EVERY SINGLE file again, taking so long that I have to take a break for 5 minutes and come back.
(I think this because there is a lot of disk thrashing during this time, and my CPU spikes with each thrash).
I defrag constantly with PerfectDisk so I know that is not the issue.

1. Is there a way to turn this "checking" off?
2. If this is not the issue does anyone have suggestions?
3. Has it been proven that RAID 0 with lets say 2 IDE drives perform better than 1 stand alone IDE drive?

Thanks for any thoughts...I am brand new to this app, and this is my only complaint...

Vegas does not work well with mpeg files. It reads and plays them, but if you really want to edit them you should just lay them all out on the timeline, then render to an avi file, edit from the avi file and then convert the final product to mpg.

Do you still have the media pool open?

You may want to close that and see if it is still trying to "read" the cache of files.

I have been working with some HUGE uncompressed AVI's I shot (one clip is like 7 minutes...but takes up 1 + GB of space). It takes a bit to open - but once it is open, I have no problem switching focus or multitasking. But I don't have my media pool open - so maybe that has something to do with it.

Or Gremlins. Could be Gremlins.

If so...stay away from water!!

There is a general pref setting you may want to uncheck:

"Close media files when not the active application"

Also try unchecking:

"Close audio and MIDI ports when Vegas is not the active application"

Having these two active can slow the reactivation of Vegas in some cases.

Thank you all so much for your quick replies.

For my particular issue it was the advice from SonicPCH that solved it....

Unchecking these 2 "close ... when Vegas is not the active application"
did it...! I am so happy that this worked out...

Load time is about 2-3 minutes for 150 MPEG-2 files, totalling 41 minutes of footage.

My guess was correct (although I was not smart enough to find those 2 settings or read the help files).
Every time I left and came back it rescanned / reloaded all MPEG-2 and associated audio/titles/files within the media bins.
(Paul I have had some pretty good luck with MPEG but will keep the AVI method in mind).

Now that I have this figured out, I can honestly say that so far this is the best 300 dollars I have ever spent on software.

I convert right from my Hitachi DVD-CAM from VRO into MPEG-2 or AVI, then into Vegas for editing, then DVDA for menus, then burn onto a Pioneer A05 4X DVD-R.
I have waited many years for an "all digital" setup like this...

Thanks guys, I can now start working on Matrix 4....
