VHS passthrough

I am trying to pass VHS through my Sony TRV 900 but with no luck.
I went to Options/Preferences/Enable DV device control, unchecked it and sellected Apply.
In the camcorder's menu the only item that sounded like the suggestion I read on this BB was DV Editing which had two choices In and Out. In was highlighted but I could not select Out.
I have L/R and V connected to the camcorder and the firewire connected from the camcorder to the computer.
Thus connected the VHS signal will not show on the camcorder. If I disconnect the firewire the signal will show on the camcorder but at no time will the signal show on the computer.
Anyone have a suggestion? Does anyone use the TRV 900?
Thanks, Ken

Are you in Europe by any chance? Many European models have this feature disabled.

Can you try recording onto DV tape first, then capturing this recording afterwards?

I am in the US, NC actually. I can record to the DV tape but I felt i should get better results if I could capture directly on the computer from the VHS tape.

I don't think "on the fly" analog pass though is possible with your camera.

I found a few places on the Internet that were offering a "hack" to get this to work but most people I found were recording to DV and then transferring to PC. They seemed to have good luck with that.

I have a Sony DV camera and the manual specifically states it is possible to pass through analog video. Does the manual for the 900 have any instructions on this?

As long as the tape you use isn't old and wearing out, you'll get absolutely identical results either by recording to tape first or a direct passthrough.

Thanks guys, I'll stick to recording the VHS to DV tape then on to the computer.
