They are not the easiest thing to make in Vegas, and even harder if you want to try to get them to loop like all the professional packages out there, but I can reccomend some very high quality loops that are 1/3rd the price of everything else on the market. You can contact me offlist at Jsnkc@charter.net if you're interested. The ones I know of you can get 100 - 10 second animations for $30 or less if you buy more than one volume.

I have used Sonic Foundry's and Jump Backs from Digital Juice. I typically composite, change color/speed, etc. with existing ones to create new ideas. In addition, I have taken still images (such as those with Editor's Toolkit), panned through them and then made a composite with others--works ok.

You can also use Patricle Illusion that is referenced on this site as FREE within this month's issue of DIGIT (barnes and nobles has it) to create some special background images.

I'm not sure which applications were used to make either the Sonic Foundry or JumpBack collections.

I bought some on ebay for a few bucks - they are okay but after downloading the Particle Illusion package others have apoken of, I am gonna build my own. I really think these can be as good as or better than the cheepies I purchased.

There is a free 30 day trial of the software included in the magazine on the Particle Illusion web site. Inspirde me to buy the magazine.

Even the cheepie ones look good if you work on them with the Vegas FX.

Yep, I have a tutorial using Axogon composer on my web site. It shows you how to make animated looped backgrounds just like MainActor does.

You have no idea how true those words are: I don’t mean to speak badly of the Digital Hotcakes guys, but some of their backgrounds (e.g., Vol 5 Pyromations and Vol 6. Acid Drops) are taken directly from particleIllusion stock templates from the PE web site. They charge $119 and $149 for the exact same backgrounds you can create for free with particleIllusion SE. Even if you paid $99 for PE you would be much better off than buying these Digital Hotcakes volumes. Not all of the Digital Hotcakes sets are like this but the two I mentioned are stock particleIllusion samples.

Surprised no one has mentioned generated noise textures, new in Vegas 4. You can create loops that look at least as good as the mainconcept stuff. Create video track -> right click -> insert generated media -> noise texture. Experiment.
