Video blacking out on timeline?

Flyer Curt wrote on 7/21/2011, 12:12 PM
Using VMS11P. While working on several projects, Casio .avi video clips load normally onto the timeline with good video and audio. But later, as I edit, put titles, etc, the video sometimes shows blackout sections for 1-3 seconds each. Once they show up, I can't re-edit the video to make them go away. I have to reload the clip from explorer - replacing the one with the blank spots. If I leave them, they ruin the render with video blackout sections.
Anyone have any ideas on this? Curt

I get this random blacking out or black screen that last anywhere from 1-3 seconds from .avi clips from my nephew's Pentax DSLR too. I don't have a problem with footage from my Canon HFS10. Mine is completely random and if I shut down and restart VMS11, it goes away. If I see it in the preview, I will see it in the final render. I generally have to shut the program down and restart it after finishing my edit but before starting my render.

I can't figure out what it is. I have the latest quicktime installed and I removed all unnecessary codecs from my computers. It is annoying but I can't repeat the same blank clip twice. It is totally random but usually never appears after a restart of the program. I have seen this when I had VMS10 and now VMS 11 both with the old built and the new 231 built.

I have researched the problem but found no solutions. It all depends on the codec that is in the .avi container, I am guessing.

Regarding the original post; Casio AVI (are yours MJPEG?) files are notorious for decoding problems, not just in Vegas. However, this becomes critical in editing applications.

You may want to look at some third party converters before bringing the video files into Vegas.

I know your post is directed at the original post but the video from the Pentax K-X DSLR is also MJPEG in an AVI container. Maybe that is why I am getting the random black screen.

Aha, I thought yours was AVC.

One thing you both could try is the Mainconcept MJPEG codec demo. Does a nice job of decoding and doesn't expire. If you don't like it, it comes with an uninstaller that doesn't leave any baddies on your system.

Thank you. My Canon is AVCHD(.m2ts). My nephew is MJPEG.

Only have random black clip once in a while with MJPEG. I will try the mainconcept on my new Thinkpad that has not been bombarded with a bunch of codec install and uninstalled.

Thanks to all. I also found out that if I restarted VMS11P the video clips would be OK again. They are .avi files coming from the Casio. I don't know what MJPEG is, so don't know if other codecs would help.

VMS10P would not play audio on the Casio .avi clips, but that is fine with VMS11P. I can work with the restarts for now.

Just to clarify, MJPEG is the codec used in the AVI wrapper by the Casio camera.

Best of luck.
