video capture

I have used vegas primarily for audio mixing in the past and done only still picture videos. I am getting new pc equipment and want to set up for more video production.

I am looking for suggestions for a video capture card that works with vegas. I presently have a pinnacle DV500 but have only "premier" to capture with (which doesn't work very well) and the card doesn't work with vegas.

any suggestions?

Are you capturing analog video or DV through Firewire? If analog, I hear good things about the Canopus AVDC cards. If DV (from a DV cam), any IEEE1394 card should work.

With Vegas, only a firewire port.

The Canopus box converts from analog to firewire, but then so do many cameras.

I have the Canopus ADVC100. I think you can pick up one for around $200 (and the ADVC-50 is slightly less).

It does a pretty good job of analog to digital and I've been able to use it to capture directly into Vegas Video, as well as Scenalyzer (an alternative, but popular, capture tool on the PC).

The Canopus ADVC-100 is a nice unit. I just got one and had it connected and running in about 5 minutes.

As mentioned you can pick one up for about $200 from the academicsuperstore.com. You need to be a student or a teacher though.

Here's a review on the ADVC-100 from SimplyDV:
