Video Capture

Have a couple of very basic questions.
1.When I go to the Video Capture tab I see a blue rectangle and when I hit the Record button I hear the audio but no video preview in this rectangle. Vegas seems to capture the files ok(no dropped frames) but I am not sure if I should be seeing a preview.
2. I am using both Firewire ports on my computer card to Capture and save to a 500GB WD My Book. As soon as I try to capture my computer locks up. The only way I get it to work is to connect my camcorder to the Firewire port and the WD to an un-used USB. Will this degrade anything?

1 - Options / Preview video

2 - No. It's just a digital data stream. Doesn't make any difference if it goes through firewire or USB to your external drive.

Thanks Chienworks for your prompt reply. Regarding Q.1 what am I supposed to see when capturing? Will the blue window in the capture tab show video or do most people not bother with this and use the camera or external monitor?
Thanks again!

You have three options, always preview, smart preview, never preview. You apparently had never preview selected. I usually set mine to always. My computer is about 12 times faster than what's necessary for effective capturing so i don't worry about the extra overhead.

I still cant see where you select these options. Could you please point me to where I select?
Sorry that I feel so stupid.
Thanks

They're in the Options menu in VidCap.

I know this post is about a month old, but I'm the same problem as the original poster.

I think the confusion lies in DV vs. HD.

When capturing DV, you use the external capture application that comes with Vegas, and in that application, you can choose the Always Preview, Never Preview, and Smart Preview.

BUT, when capturing HD, you use the internal capturing application in Vegas itself. In this capture application, you don't have those same options. In fact, I haven't seen anything similar to what the external DV capture application has.

Those of you out there using the HV20 or other HD camera with Vegas 8, do you have video preview when capturing, and if so, how do you get it going? Thanks!

i preview the video in the little preview window in the HD capture tab. audio comes out my speakers. Just like DV capture as far as I can tell.
