There's an option setting that tells VMS where to look for the capture application. Offhand I don't remember if you leave this blank to default to the built-in app, or you have to specify it explicitly, but I vaguely remember having to mess with this myself to get it working.

I'm not sure what you are referring to in terms of option settings. I have gone to "Options" and then "Preferences" and then "Video" and then I see a selection which shows the "Preferred Video Capture Application" and it shows "D:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio 6.0\Vidcap 6.0.exe" as the selection. I clicked on "Apply" just to make sure but I am still getting the same error message.

I can find no other option settings referring to Video Capture.

That's the setting, I think. I can't check as I'm away from my VMS system.

Thanks for the quick reply. If that is the setting and it doesn't help then I guess I had better wait for some thoughts from Sony Support. About the same time I posted my question here I sent them a message and they responded in about two hours rather than the usual one to two weeks so maybe they will have some answers.

If you come up with any other thoughts when you get a chance to get back to your VMS 6.0 I would be more than appreciative.

Thanks again,

Jim

I have had a full afternoon exchanging messages with Sony Support. Here are the messages in case anyone on this forum might have some idea as to what is going wrong.

I upgraded from Vegas Movie Studio 4.0 to MS 6.0 Now when I try to capture video I keep getting the error message "Specified video capture application cannot be opened." I have check and find that VidCap 60.exe is installed.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong.

thanks

Greetings James,

Thank you for writing. In this case please let us know how are you trying to capture? How are you connecting the camera to the computer? Once we have the required information we will be glad to assist you further with the best of our abilities.

Sincerely,

I am running the i-link cable from the Sony TRV-33 camcorder to the I-link port on my Sony Computer. I have installed and am running the 6.0 software. In VMS 6.0 I have gone to "Options" and then "Preferences" and then "Video" and then I see a selection which shows the "Preferred Video Capture Application" and it shows "D:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio 6.0\Vidcap 6.0.exe" as the selection. I clicked on "Apply" just to make sure but I am still getting the same error message.

I am still able to use Video Capture in the Vegas Movie Studio 4.0 program with the same connection with the I-Link cable so I am sure that it is not the camcorder nor cable's malfunction.

Sincerely,

James Winters
Greetings James,

Thank you for writing. The error occurs if the capture drive or folder does not exist. Go into Video Capture (To get to Video Capture, go into the File menu and select Capture Video), and into Options-->Preferences. Then click on the Disk Management tab to specify a valid capture location. Click on Add Folder to navigate to a location on your hard drive to store the captured files, and make sure that entry on the list has a checkmark on it before clicking Ok.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have follow up questions or need further assistance with this issue, please update this incident.

Sincerely,
Your suggestion does not help.

When I go to the file menu as you suggest and select "Capture Video" I immediately get the message "The specified video capture application cannot be opened." D:\program files\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio 6.0\Vidcap 60.exe".

So I cannot even begin to go to Options, Preferences, Disk Management, etc. as you said that I should.

Sincerely,

James Winters

Greetings James,

Thank you for the reply. In this case I suggest you to clean unisdtall the software from ADD/Remove programs and then reinstall it from update pages:-

Once you have updated the pages, then please try to capture again.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have follow up questions or need further assistance with this issue, please update this incident.

Sincerely,

OK, I succeeded in installing the Vegas MS 6.0. However after I had it installed and clicked on video capture I am still having the error messages to which I have already referred. I also get the error message when I click on file and attempt to establish a capture drive such as you mentioned a couple of messages ago.

Is there something else you can suggest?

Sincerely yours,

James Winters

OK, I finally succeeded in getting Vidi Cap to work. I re-installed the MS 6.0 to my C rather than D drive and things worked well. I suspect the program was looking for certain files to be on the C rather than D partition and when it didn't find them, it gave the error message. So I guess the alerts I've read from Sony about using the C drive are important to remember.
