Does anyone know how to change the codec that's used during
capturing of DV by Video Capture? I'd like to try the Main
Concept Codec, but can't figure out how to activate it.
Well, I can't use it because I don't know how to setup it
up for use by Video Capture, which was the point of my
question.
Perhaps part of my problem is not knowing how the video
camera, OHCI interface and the Codec ties together. I know
that when I do a capture, I end up with an .AVI file.
However, is the decoding performed by the video camera, or
is it done by Video Capture. Or, does the .AVI file
contain the video still encoded
All I know is that the interlace/progressive settings in
the media file and rendering settings are having no impact
on eliminating the artifacts I'm getting.
I don't use the MainConcept Codec, but, "at your own peril"
is a bit strong, don't you think, SonicEPM? I mean, using
that codec won't eat your VV CD program disk or render
(pardon the pun) your computer lifeless, right? Use of the
codec might, if it causes problems on your system, require
you to do a system restore and re-install of VV at most,
would you not agree?
RE: Main Concept (MeinKoncept) DV codec: I
checked it out, not bad!
Important Note:Its dangerous/tricky to replace the Windows
codec (you are advised to just install the MC codec and
leave it at that), and there is definitely a risk of
breaking external monitor in Vegas by doing the hack.
However, the quality of MCDV is quite good and if you
install it NORMALLY it will appear as a render option.
Worth a try- and again: DO NOT hack the registry and try to
replace the Windows DV codec.
NTSC DV files seem to work fine- and I'd like to hear other
user opinions...
Capturing DV has nothing to do with any DV codec. The camera does the compression and the only thing coming over 1394 is data.
The codec comes into play when you recompress DV in Vegas. If you install the MCDV codec normally, you should see it as a render option in the avi>video>format dropdown list. If all your settings (repeat ALL) match the stock "NTSC DV" template and you make the sole modification of choosing the MCDV codec, you should have a valid DV file you can print to tape. MCDV is a decent codec in my opinion, but most users will not see a difference.
Please note: There are a number of forum posts floating around that describe how to hack the registry/OS so the MCDV codec replaces the Microsoft codec. BAD idea. If the MCDV codec gets installed along side the Microsoft codec, you should be fine, but hacking the registry as some of these posts advise turns Vegas into an unsupported product.
