Video Capture from DVD-R 1.4GB

Someone has given me a series of DVD-R from a Sony DVD Camcorder. I have been asked to capture the video, edit it etc.

I am unable to play them on any DVD player let alone capture video from them. I am using Vegas 7 and have been trying to capture the video from my PC DVD drive. Is the only way to capture the video by having the DVD-R in the actual DVD camcorder connected to the PC?

Also, any thoughts why the DVDs do not play on any DVD players?

Thanks

File - Import - DVD Camcorder disc does it.

Sounds like they weren't finalized (in the DVD camcorder, that is).

I tried the file > import - dvd camcorder disc but the discs are not recognized.

Thanks for your help.

They'll need to be finalized. Either give the discs back to your client to do this or borrow the camcorder and do it yourself.

Yup. If you don't finalize them, you won't be able to read them.

These DVDs weren't made with a Sony UX1 AVCHD camcorder, were they? If so, Vegas can't read UDF 2.5 formatted discs yet, nor can it edit AVCHD. Same thing holds true for DVD players. They can't read or play back the format. Only a Blu-ray player can play them back.
