video capture problem

I always ask the most pedestrian questions...

I'm trying to help a friend. I need to capture some Hi-8 video to Vegas 12 build 770. I haven't needed to do this in years. Capture worked for a few seconds and then I get a popup with the following words:

The device "Camera Web Camera Filter" could not be opened.

I don't remember this problem. Any ideas?

This is windows 7 64-bit.

It's only designed to work with 1394 Firewire interface.
Your analog camcorder would connect to an A->D device, then that would connect to the firewire capture port on your pc.

Yup, Roger that...

the camera is connected via firewire and does the A>D conversion. I've used it many times before and in this configuration. But, that was many years ago. Working backwards at a friends request I powered up my old PC with firewire card and cable only to find this problem, a new one for me.

You may need to remove the drivers AND registry entries for that device.
I encountered this once on XP iirc.

Will it capture fine with no video signal plugged in to the A-D device?

I was thinking maybe the H-8 is dropping out and stopping the capture when the control track is lost. just a wild guess though.

the PC just kind of blew up. It was overheating and now its kaput. Perhaps that was the problem. So I ordered another firewire card for my newer i7. I guess we will wait until it arrives and then we'll try again.

thanks,
