Video Capture Problems

Having problems capturing video. With Smart Preview or
Never Preview selected, when I start capturing, I recieve
the following error message

"An error occurred while capturing from the device --- An
error occurred reading the file --- Make sure you have read
access to the file/folder and that it is not corrupted."

However if using Always Preview I can capture video, but
have more problems with dropped frames. In the other two
capture modes, it does not seem like it is even doing a
single write operation to the HD.

OS: WIN_ME
DIRECTX: ver 8
HARD DRIVE: IBM Deskstar 10Gig 7200 ATA/33
Computer: Pentium III 500. 128mb Ram.
Capture Card: ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 32mb
Camera: Canon ES6500V HI-8(Analog)

Does capture work using the ATI capture software that came
with your AIW Radeon? If yes, you can change the default
capture program in Options/Preferences/Video.

Do you have the most update to date ATI drivers installed
(downloaded from their website)? I haven't used the Radeon
card, but have used the Rage card successfully.

Yes, currently I'm using the special purpose driver
v.4.12.3063

What's the seleced device on the Video menu read?

Hi Drew,

I just tried the VideoFactory capture program and can
confirm the same error with the Smart Preview and Never
Preview options. I also cannot record anything without
dropping frames, and no wonder since it only will capture
in a very inefficient MJPEG format. A 5 minute capture
produced a whopping 2 gig file.

I cannot set the capture program to use any other Codec for
capture.

My system is very similar to yours except I'm running Win2K
and have 300 more Mhz. I'm using the ATI Rage Fury Pro VIVO
(same capture chip as the Radeon).

Luckily, the ATI capture program is working well for me.

More info...

I also dual boot to Win98SE. Under Win98, 2 devices appear
in the Video settings in the VF capture program. The "ATI
WDM Rage Theater Video Capture" setting causing the error
you mentioned using any preview mode. The "ATI Multimedia
Video Driver" setting works correctly and even allows me to
select from a limited number of Codecs. I can then capture
using any of the preview modes without dropping frames.
However, if I try to capture at 720x480, I start to drop
frames but I think that may be solved with a dedicated hard
drive for capture.

So it appears to be a driver incompatibility issue with the
newer ATI WDM capture device driver. The ATI MMC version 7
or greater uses this device and it is the only one available
under Win2K (and probably WinME). So it looks like we are
stuck with using the ATI MMC software for capture, until
the newer device is supported by VF capture.

Hi Brad,

I have a Maxtor 40 GB firewire drive plugged into the same
firewire card that I capture with. It works great on my
new Pentium 4 computer. I tried it on my old 200 mhz
pentium and it did not work very well. I think processor
speed and power have an effect on the overall quality of
the process. Hope this helps.
