I have a Firewire card on my PC and trying to capture video from my digital camera. I have 2 miniDV digital cameras and the same problem is occourinng. I have a JVC and a Sony. When i open SOny Video capture with the JVC connected (via Firewire) video capture detected the device but when i clicked capture the JVC disappeared. I figured my JVC may be having problems (it's older and the LCD screen is having problems) so i hooked up the Sony and it did not recognize it. Plugged the JVC back in and not noticed. Restarted the cameras and PC a few times and all i see is the analog capture card as the onlwy selection. WHat am i doing wrong??? I have done this quite smoothly in V3 and V4. I jsut started getting back into editing after a few years and V8 looks pretty much the same but never had this difficulty before. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance!!!!

The accepted way of connecting a camera via firewire is to *always* plug your firewire cable into a camera with the camera power OFF .. the computer should be on, but the camera should be off.

ONLY then do you power up the camera. Doing it any other way *may* work .. or it may mess things up.

To be a little more specific. It might damage your camera and/or your computer and it isn't covered under warranty. We've passed on some significant repair bills to people who have done this.

To be even more specific. You should have both the computer AND the camera / VCR powered OFF.

Always check firewire cables especially the 6 pin ones for headshells that have come away from the cable. In this state it is all too easy to twist the conductors and short circuit 12V to a data line.

The only thing i have not tried was a new cable. I have never seen these cables go bad but i guess it is worht a shot.
