Video Capture Was Working Fine - Suddenly, Crashing

I'm hoping someone might have an idea about how to correct this - I've actually had service pack 2 installed on my machine since I got it, and I tried capturing some video when I first installed Vegas and it worked fine (using a Canopus ADVC-100).

Suddenly, last night I tried to capture video - and everything seems to be fine until I click the "stop" button - then I get the hourglass, and Capture crashes. The whole machine doesn't crash, but Capture just freezes up and never completes the capture, showing the finished file below. If I dig around on the machine I can find the file that was created, but this is only after I restart the computer - because I can't end the program.

Other things I noticed - even if I don't try to capture, if I open Sony Capture once, then close it, and try to reopen it, it won't reopen. I uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas, and it doesn't fix anything. This is a bit maddening since it was working FINE a few days ago. I don't believe I've done anything different to my machine except possibly clickng "OK" for the machine to install Windows updates - but I don't know what updates it installed. Could that be causing this problem?

After this started happening I tried to capture video using the utility program that came with my computer and I had the same issue, so that might be some insight too - the capture seems to go fine until I click "Stop Capturing", then everything crashes. With this one, the file that it was creating isn't able to be opened afterward, once I navigate to it.

That still doesn't explain why Sony's Capture utility would only allow me to open it once before it doesn't want to open again, though. I have to restart my computer to get it to open.

Does this sound like I need that patch from MSFT? To me it sounds like that patch is for when people are having issues with their Firewire connection and I haven't seen that necessarily - though another weird thing I noticed just last night is that now, my M-Audio Firewire 410 used to blink all the time, even when the machine was off, indicating that it recognized a firewire connection being present (same with my Midiman 2X2, which is USB). As of last night, both of those devices no longer blink and flash when the computer is off, they only light up when it is turned on. I don't know if all of this is related...but that's all of the info I have...ANY IDEAS?!?

Your input is greatly appreciated...

Obviously (to me anyway) - these problems are likely to have ocurred due to the Windows Update you ran a few days ago. Although it does not sound like you have been capturing very frequently? So maybe this problem cropped up some time ago - very difficult to be certain about this.

Only suggestion I have is to use System Restore to roll back the changes that were done to your system to a date on which you know it was working (or at least prior to when you did the Windows Update).

Thanks a bunch Liam - I considered that but I have found that when I experience issues with the studio suite I'm building it is almost never the most obvious answer...though I'm happy to report that this time, it was. A system restore to the point previous to another disatserous update by MSFT got everything back on track, and I'm up and running again. Thanks again for taking the time to respond - be well!
