When videoing sporting events the video picture is very bad. I record straight to a external hard drive via a firewire cable. i have a dell laptop 80GB. Games usually last 3 hours. I use a JVC-mini dv gy-dv500. But when i burn to dvd it is still pretty bad. I was wondering what are some things that I could check to make picture better.

You say games usually last 3 hours - how much are you putting on a DVD? 3 hours of action on a sigle sided DVD needs a lot of compression.

I have some Dual Layer DVDs. The thing that gets me is that it looks so clear on my monitor when i am taping it, but when i put it to a dvd the picture is very bad. grainy and stuff like that. I didnt know if i was not selecting the right settings when i am starting to burn it, like the mpeg2 and avi and so fourth. thanks.
